We were in Thailand 5 years ago just after Tiger Kingdom had opened. We were allowed to go into the large enclosed area with a large shallow pool and several tigers. The tigers were about 6 months old and the facility was spotless with lots of grass for the animals. We played with them-- using palm fronds and coconuts. We took wonderful pictures and it was truly an amazing experience to get that close to the animals. They were not drugged and appeared to be well taken care of. We were informed that as the tigers reached 6 months of age or more they were sent to zoos all over the world. I don't know if this is still the case. I believe that just being able to interact with the tigers was the best educational experience a person could ever have. Once animals become real, and candidly you couldn't get much more real that in this environment, you develop a strong desire to have those animals around for your great-great grandchildren. My husband's leather birks were especially attractive to the young tigers. They never bit through the leather, but they sure loved sucking on those shoes. One family came in while we were with the tigers. They were obviously terrified and it made absolutely no sense for them to be with the animals. No one in the party of 4 touched an animal and they took a few pictures. The wife/mother turned her back on one of the young tigers--- of course you were told time and time again not to do that-- and to no one's surprise one of the tigers grabbed her ankle while her back was turned to him. It was a lot like when you have a playful cat-- however this lady let out an ear-splitting shriek and scared all of us, especially the tigers.
If you are fearful of animals DO NOT GO TO TIGER KINGDOM!!!! My husband received a slight scratch on his forearm when he failed to hold the palm frond far enough in front of him. He wore that little scratch with pride. Go to Tiger Kingdom, enjoy interacting with the animals, be thankful that they are relatively healthy and are not being mistreated. Take with you the understanding that these magnificent creatures need to be protected for future generations.
