The King Mengrai the Great Memorial is located in the Muang District on the intersection leading to Mae Chan. Originally, King Mengrai was the ruler of Nakhon Hiran Ngoen Yang (an ancient town on the bank of the Mae Khong around Chiang Saen) before Chiang Rai was established as the administrative centre in 1262. He consolidated his power by merging the different city-states in the North and founded the Lanna Thai Kingdom in 1296 with Chiang Mai as the capital.

The King Mengrai Stupa in front of Wat Ngam atop Doi Ngam Muang district was built by King Chaisongkram to contain the remains of his father (King Mengrai).

The Wat Phra Sing, on Singhaklai Road near the townhall used to house a major Buddha statue, the Phra Buddha Sihing which is now enshrined in Chiang Mai. A special feature is the Lanna-style Ubosot and the wooden door panels carved by Chiang Rai contemporary craftsmen.

Situated on Trairat Road in town centre, Wat Phra Kaeo was where one of Thailand's most important Buddha statues was discovered in 1444. The statue had been moved by various state rulers to be placed in their respective capitals as a symbol of dominance, including Lampang, Chiang Rai and Vientiane before finally being enshrined in Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaeo during the reign of King Rama l of the Rattanakosin Period. The temple also houses a 700 years old bronze statue, Phra Chao Lan Thong, which is housed in the Chiang Saen-style Ubosot.

Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, located on Doi Chom Thong on the bank of the Kok River within Muang district, contains what is believed to be the oldest Holy Relic even before King Mengrai built Chiang Rai. A major religious site in Chiang Rai, it was from here that King Mengrai spotted the strategic location on which to establish the town. The Chedi containing the Holy Relic was probably renovated at the same time the town was being built.

Located at the former townhall, Ho Watthanatham Nithat is a museum exhibiting ancient artifacts and written records on history, literature and indigenous intelligence as well as exhibits on royal activities by the late Princess Mother at Doi Tung . It is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 8.00 a.m. until 3.00 p.m.

The Kok River flows through the town of Chiang Rai and is 130 kilometres long. Long-tailed boats can be rented from town to travel along the river on both sides of which are lovely sceneries. Stops can be made at hilltribe villages of the Akha or lko, Lisu, Karen, etc. Elephant rides are also available to see the surrounding area. Another river routed starts from Tha Ton in Chiang Rai going northward to Chiang Rai town. The trip takes about four hours. Trips by bamboo raft takes 3 days and 2 nights.

The Nam Khun Kon Forest Park can be reached by taking Highway #1211 from town. After 18 kilometres turn right and proceed on for another 12 kilometres. Or go along Highway No. 1 ( Chiang Rai-Phayao ) for about 15 kilometres where there is a right turn to proceed further another 17 kilometres, then a 30-minute walk to the waterfall. The highest and most scenic waterfall in Chiang Rai, the Khun Kon is some 70 metes high. Along the route to the site are cool, shady natural surroundings eminently suitable for relaxation and nature walking.

Doi Mae Salong is the site of Santi Khiri village, a community settled by remnants of the former Chinese 93rd Division who moved from Myanmar to Thai territory since 1961. Today it is a major tourist attraction with its small town ambience on high hills, delicious native Chinese dishes and small hotels and guesthouses catering to visitors. During December - February, the hills are alive with pinkish Sakuras. To reach it, take the Chiang Rai- Mae Chan route for 29 kilometres, then turn left and proceed on for another 41 kilometres (passing a hot spring). The return trip can be undertaken on routes no. 1234 and no. 1130 which wind through Yao and Akha villages. From Doi Mae Salong a road leads to Ban Tha Ton, the starting for the Kok River cruise, a distance of 45 kilometres.

Doi Hua Mae Kham is the domicile of the hilltribe near the Thai Burmese border, about three hours by road along the Mea Chan - Ban Thoet Thai Ban Huai ln route which winds along the steep mountain edge. The inhabitants are predominantly of the Lisu tribe, with a smattering of the Akha, Hmong and Muser. Doi Hua Mae Kham is most scenic in November when the yellow Wild Sunflowers are in full bloom.

Doi Tung is located in Mae Fa Luang district, reachable by taking Highway No. 110 for about 48 kilometres. Then turn left onto Highway No. 1149, an asphalt road leading to Doi Tung. The route winds through beautiful scenery and with many interesting sites. These include the Doi Tung Palace and the Mae Fa Luang Garden, Akha and Muser tribal villages. There are also view points and the Phra That Doi Tung Holy Relic, an old religious site atop the Doi, about 2,000 metres above sea level.

About 62 kilometres from the provincial seat on Highway No. 110 is Thailand's norther-most district. Mae Sai borders on Myanmar's Tha Khi Lek marked by the Mae Sai River with a bridge spanning both sides. Foreign visitors are allowed to cross over to the Tha Khi Lek market by presenting their passports and paying a fee at the Mae Sai immigration checkpoint. ln addition, there are tour services up to Chiang Tung in Myanmar which is some 160 kilometres north by road.

Chiang Saen was an ancient town located on the bank of Mae Khong River. The district can be reached by taking Highway no. 110 from Chiang Rai for some 30 kilometres. Then take a right turn into Highway no. 1016 and proceed on for another thirty kilometres. Originally called Wiang Hiran Nakhon Ngoen Yang, it served as the main town before King Mengrai established Chiang Rai as the capital in 1262. Traces of old double city walls and many other antiquities still remain both within and outside the district town.

The Chiang Saen National Museum is where knowledge can be sought concerning archaeology, settlements and history of the town. There are replicas of the community and scores of ancient relics including Lanna-style sculptures, Buddha statues and inscription stones from Phayao and Chiang Saen itself. In addition, there are exhibitions of indigenous art obects of the Thai Yai, Thai Lu and other hilltribes. These items include musical instruments, ornaments, opium-smoking accessories, etc. Open Wednesday-Sunday from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon.

Wat Phra That Chedi Luang, located in Chiang Saen old town, was built by King Saen Phu, the 3rd ruler of the Lanna Kingdom in early 13th Century. Ancient sites include the bell-shaped, Lanna-style principal Chedi which measures 88 metres high with a base 24 metres wide, the largest such structure in Chiang Saen. There are also remains of ancient Wihan and Chedi.

Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong is located within the city wall, built by Prince Thong Ngua, a son of King Tilokkarat, the 12th ruler of Lanna, in 1489. A 1200-kilogram Buddha statue was cast. Named the Phra Chao Lan Thong, it has a lap width of 2 metres and is over three metres high. Another statue called Phra Chao Thong Thip was also cast which is made of brass and in the Sukhothai style.

Wat Pa Sak, about one kilometre to the west of Chiang Saen in Tambon Wiang, was built by King Saen Phu in 1295 and three hundred teak trees were planted, hence the name Pa Sak (Teak Woods). It was then the residence of the patriarch. The temple's chedi is of the beautiful Chiang Saen architectural style and the exteriors are elaborately decorated 12.5 meters tall with a base of 8 metres wide.

There are also several ancient sites outside the city wall including Wat Phra That Chom Kitti, about 1.7 kilometres from town, and Wat Sangkha Kaeo Don Han where sketches on brick slabs tell stories about the various lives of the Lord Buddha.

The Chiang Saen Lake is a large natural reservoir with scenic surroundings. Large flocks of waterfowls immigrate to the site during winter. About five kilometres from the distract town on the Chiang Saen-mae Chan route is a left turn. Proceed on for another 2 kilometres to reach the site.

The Golden Triangle is about 9 kilometres from the Chiang Saen old town to the north along the road parallel to the Mae Khong River. The area is locally referred to as cSop Rukae, Where the Mae Khong meets the Ruak River. This is where the borders of three countries, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, come together. There are remains of many ancient places and structures attesting to the area having been settled by people in the past. It is also where various legends on the Lanna ancestors originate.

Around Sop Ruak are boat rental service to view the scenery around the Golden Triangle. In addition, boats can be hired to cruise from Sop Ruak along the Mae Khong River to chiang Saen and Chiang Khong which takes around 40 minutes and 1 1/2 hours respectively.

Phra That Doi Pu Khao is located on the hill just before the Golden Triangle and is believed to have been built by a king of Wiang Hirannakhon Ngoen Yang in mid-8th century. Remains of antiquities still visible today are only the Wihan and crumbled Chedis.

About 4 kilometres from Chiang Saen on the road to Chiang Khong is Phra That Pha Ngao. There is a bell shaped Chedi standing on large boulders. Nearby is a Wihan where several old Chiang Saen-style Buddha statues are enshrined. There is also a viewing point to enjoy scenery of the Mae Khong and of Chiang Saen itself.

Chiang Khong is a small, peaceful district on the bank of the Mae Khong opposite Muang Huai of Laos. lt is about 115 kilometres from the provincial seat, or some 55 kilometres from Chiang Saen on Highway No. 1129 to the east. Chiang Khong is noted as the place where Pla Buk, the giant catfish, are caught. The fishing season is from mid-January to May. The Chiang Khong Fishery Station is able to inseminate and breed this largest fresh-water fish in the world. Fingerlings bred here have been released in several rivers. Sight-seeing trips by boat are available to view the scenery and life along the Mae Khong. A stop can be made at Ban Hat Bai, a Thai lu community noted for making beautiful local material. To crossover the Muang Huai Sai in Laos, contact the immigration office at Chiang Khong.

Doi Pha Tang, located in Wiang Kaen district some 160 kilometres from the provincial town, is a viewing point on top of a high cliff over the Thai-Laotian border affording a delightful scene of the river and the sea of mist throughout the year. During December-January, blooming Sakuras provide a picturesque scenery. It is home to the Chinese Haw, the Hmong and Yao minorities. The Haws are the remnants of the 93rd Chinese Division who moved in to settle on Doi Pha Tang.

Another viewing point is Phu Chi Fa which is some 25 kilometres south of Doi Pha Tang in Toeng district. Visitors can stay overnight at Ban Rom Fa Thong and Ban Rom Fa Thai. From here a trail leads up to the viewing point on top of the hill, a distance of 1.8 kilometres. From the sheer cliff of Phu Chi Fa can be seen spectacular scenes, especially the sea of mist at sunrise. The cool climate produces colourful flowering shrubs of various species.

Pu Kaeng Waterfall is the site of Doi Luang National Park's headquarters located in Phan district. To reach it, go on the Chiang Rai-Phayao route for 58 kilometres to arrive at Bang Pu Kaeng. At Km. 77, take amid virgin jungle with water cascading down limestone brooks. There are camping area and jungle trekking services.

Wiang Ka Long is a community about 16 kilometres from the district office of Wiang Pa Pao. Here have been found remains of ancient furnaces used to make terra cotta utensils. The furnaces are shaped like turtleshell of various sizes with a width of 2 to 5 metres.

Bo Nam Ron or hot spring, located at Tambon Mae Chedi Mai on the Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai road at Kms. 64-65, is found next to a stream. Villagers sell eggs to tourists to boil in the hot spring.

The Khun Chae National Park at Tambon Mae Chedi Mai of Wiang Pa Pao district can be reached by taking the Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai route ( Highway No. 1188). The park headquarters is right next to the highway at Kms. 55-56. The trek through the Khun Chae jungle is for adventure travel enthusiasts as the route passes through steep terrain and several hilltops and cliffs over 1,400 metres height. There are good viewing points and trekkers can enjoy waterfalls, flowing streams and virgin jungle areas lush with plant life.

Certain food items are quite popular such as Naem and Mu Yo (preserved and fermented pork sausages). Agricultural products include lichee (April-May), pineapple and tea, as well as other cool climate produce from various royal projects.

Night Market: SATURDAY NIGHT STREET MARKET

Another street market that attracts a lot of people.

This market also has everything you could possibly want, and as a tourist, it is worth going to for a browse around.

It starts at 5, but it is probably better to arrive after 6pm in the hot weather. The road is closed to cars from 4pm. It finishes at 11pm.
It's the old silver working district, and some shops stay open late on this day.

I went to this market 1st, then the Sunday market, which in my opinion is a lot better.
# Theme: Other
# Directions: Wualai Road, the main street of the traditional silver village, is closed from where the road starts just outside Chiang Mai Gate up to Tippanet Road. Near the Night Bazaar

THIS SUNDAY NIGHT STREET MARKET, WOULD HAVE TO BE THE BEST IN CHIANG MAI!

It was actually located in the street where my Hotel was, so I just walked out of the door and into the market.
My Hotel told me this was a good one, that prices were better than the other markets and the Night Bazaar AND that the prices are 'THAI PRICES' which means the same as Thai people pay.
I think they were right, as I had already been to both.

Here, you'll not only find Thai crafts and products, it's also located in an area full of coffee shops, sidewalk cafes, bars, restaurants, beautiful Thai temples and food & drink stalls.
The choice at these markets was amazing, and quite a lot that was on sale here, WAS NOT ON SALE AT THE OTHER MARKETS.
Thai handicrafts, clothing, shoes, food, photograph frames, hill tribe pillowcases and bed spreads, handmade jewelry, slippers, bags, Thai silk shawls and scarves, handmade soaps, dolls, pillow cases, art work and more ......

The Stalls are located on the sides and centre, so walk down one side, and back up the other, you won't miss anything then.

Chiang Mai's Sunday Walking Street Market is located in Old Town, (the area with the old city wall and the moat). On Sundays around 4pm, the city closes off the entire street (which stretches for at least a mile), plus other streets off the main road.

Then stall keepers start to set up their wares. There were street performers, and at the end of Phraprokkaow road, there was a Stage set up, with Thai Dancers and Music.
Plenty of chairs for seating was available.

The market opens at around 4pm and closes at 11pm every Sunday.
Lots and lots of people come here, keep your money safe, and have a good time.

Make sure you take a lot of money (you'll need it!)
A MUST DO!!!!!!

www.visitchiangmai.com.au - Situated only 2 minutes walk north from the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar and sitting beside the Ping River the Warorot Market is a busy hive of daytime activity. Warorot Market opens daily early in the morning and closes after dark. Go by foot, pedicab, Tuk-Tuk or Songtheaw as it is nearly impossible to get a park there unless you have a motor bike.

Warorot Market is one of the places where lots of Thai locals do their own shopping, so expect to find the same or similar goods that you see at other Markets also sold here but cheaper and usually of better quality. You will also find a lot of goods here that you will not find in the tourist Markets like the Night Bazaar.

You can buy almost anything at Warorot Market, a real mixed bag of everything. There are fresh/dried fruit - vegetables - flowers, butchery and bakery items, herbs, condiments, clothing, shoes, cosmetics, jewellry, lacquerware, silks, hemps, handicrafts, ceramics, wood carvings, beauty supplies, household appliances, electronic gadgets, sunglasses, watches, souvenirs, and fireworks, just to name a few.

All items are really cheap. If you want something, look around, it is probably there somewhere. There are lots of indoor and outdoor shops and stalls over several streets so be prepared to spend a bit of time and have a good look around.

Check out the big fruit and vegetable shop next to the Flower Market. The sizes, shapes, colours and smells of the huge variety of asian fruits on display is amazing. If you are not sure what the fruits are, ask for a little taste test, most are very obliging.

The back and side streets around the Warorot Market are full of Hill Tribe and Northern Thai handicraft product stalls and shops along with various textiles outlets for things like silk and hemp. Again, usually cheaper and much higher quality than in other Markets like the Night Bazaar or the Saturday Markets.

Best place to go to see local Thai shopping at bargain prices is Warorot Market when you visit Chiang Mai.

Night Bazaar
Chiang Mai

The Night Bazaar, or Kad Luang (Royal Market) as it is know by locals, is one of Chiang Mai's biggest draws. Located right in the centre of the city on Ping River, it is easily accessible and if you are in Chiang Mai a visit is almost obligatory. The market attracts huge crowds every evening and it is a great place to pick up trinkets and gifts. Given the market’s close proximity to the companies that manufacture them, the price of local handicrafts is attractively cheap here.

The market has huge arcades which hold a multitude of shops and stalls. The place is so packed that stalls actually spill over onto the footpaths around the market. It’s a big place to wander around, and you should put away at least a couple of hours to do it. Aside from local handicrafts, you can buy virtually anything you can think of at the market – ‘Rolex’ watches, silk, jewelry and more high-tech items like TVs and DVD plays and CDs. As with many markets, the Night Bazaar also offers some of the best street food you are likely to come across. Catering for the large number of foreigners visiting, the bazaar also offers camera shops, travel agents and internet cafes. Be prepared to bargain – to get the best price you will have to. One service the bazaar offers that seems eternally popular is portrait paintings from photos. Alternatively, have your portrait painted in Thai costume!

How to get there: The Night Bazaar is on Chang Klan Road between Tha Pae Road and Si Donchai Road. If you are staying in Chiang Mai it is probably within walking distance.

Beautiful Floats, Pretty Girls and Marching Bands

Chiang Mai Flower Festival Parade

Every year during the first weekend in February is the Chiang Mai Flower Festival. The city is awash with vibrant colors ranging from the electric orange and lilac colors of the bougainvillea to the velvety blossoms of petunias in all shades of pink, white and purple. The strident red of the poinsettias, bought by many at Christmas and New Years, is echoed by beds of scarlet salvias. Homes and shop owners alike line the city streets with colorful flower boxes. The sheer profusion of color that the flower festival and carnival brings to Chiang Mai aptly gives the city its name "Rose of the North".
On all three days of the festival, prize blooms are on display at Suan Buak Haad near the city center. Every type of flower, miniature tree and orchid is put on display for the judges to choose the best of the species. Landscape specialists put on an elaborate display, which includes patios and waterfalls with exotic decorative plants and flowers.

The best part of the flower festival is on Saturday. This is when we load our lawn chairs and ice chest in the pick-up and head to D.K. Bookstore along the moat in the city center. We go there because there is plenty of parking and excellent coffee and pastry shops.

On the way we passed the flower covers floats, Hill Tribes and Thais in their traditional dress and uniformed marching bands all getting in line to start the parade. We had to leave the house before 8 AM as the parade start around 9 AM. Although it would not be until 10 AM until the parade reached us we had lots of fun eating Thai food from local vendors, relaxing in our lawn chairs at curbside and watching the world go by.

The parade lines up from the train station to Narawatt bridge so the police close most of Jarenmuang Road around 8 AM. The VIP viewing stand is right next to the bridge in front of the Chiang Mai Governor's home. The Parade route goes down Thapae Road to the Gate and turns left and follows the moat to Suan Buak Haad City Park.
The parade moves at a slow pace and stops several times so there is plenty of time to take pictures of the colorful floats, pretty girls and hill tribe people in costume. The people in the parade hand out roses to spectators lining the road.

When the parade finishes everyone heads to Suan Buak Haad where all the floats, award winning flower growers and landscapers projects are all on display. There are plenty of food stalls located in the park and in late afternoon the Miss Chiang Mai Flower festival starts. The party goes well into the evening until the new Flower Festival Queen is chosen.

This is a great time to visit Chiang Mai, as the air is cool and the evenings fresh and clear. If you want to see the festival make sure you book your hotels and flights well in advance.

Description
A branch of Thailand's largest gems retailer, this gallery is well worth a visit. Step in and be escorted down a hallway lined with display cases of intricate jade and fishbone sculptures. Then you will be guided to the showroom where precious gems, arranged by stone and setting, sparkle temptingly. Prices vary tremendously depending on the carats of emeralds, diamonds, yellow sapphires and single-stone emeralds. The gallery also sells simple silver jewelry, jade, and semi-precious stones. loved the rubies, need to replace
By scott honn, 1/13/08
The store itself is wonderful! I took my time and my sales rep Pong was very patient with me. I even had to come back a second time to pick up a few more things and brought a friend with me and he was very impressed with their knowledge of products and price. we both left very satisfied and were ready to get home to show off our items. I now need to get in touch with the Gem Gallery as my items were stolen in a break-in and I want to replace them. Would anyone that reads this have an email address for them? Thanks JJH Texas

Very pleasant service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/19/07
I have now purchsed 3 items from gems gallery and the service on all visits was thorough, attentative and very friendly. The jewellry is very traditional gemstone type-nothing too arty here but they will make to your specifications. It is worth bargaining because they can drop the price for many reasons but remember that these ladies are making a commission for their sales. Victoria and Angela can both be recommended as saleswomen.

Attention Silver Jewellery Lovers
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/12/04
If it's silver jewellery that you are after, the gems gallery at Bangkok had an abundance of beautiful pieces with different stones. They ranged from very elegant to big and chunky. I also visited the gem gallery in Phuket but they didn't have a very good range of silver. They only had large chunky rings, not small delicate ones. The staff are fantastic, speak excellent English and of course the free drinks go down a treat on a hot humid day. Transport was also free to and from our hotel.

From $25 to $700 -- happiness for all on the shopping list.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/23/04
Gems Gallery is the Wal-Mart of Thai jewelry stores. Like the ubiquitous super centers dotting the USA, the size of the facility and the variety and array of available merchandise has to impress. Also like wally world -- the prices are good and the value consistent. While in Chiengmai, I made two trips. On the first, I trusted them to replace the stone on my Naval Academy class ring. I chose a black sapphire and it turned out beautifully. The next day when I returned to pick up the ring, I shopped for gifts ranging in price from $25 for a modern garnet pendant with matching silver snake chain for the girl friend of my baby brother to $700 for gorgeous yellow sapphire, topaz, amethyst, and garnet fall earrings to match a lariat necklace bought at the Phuket store last year by my sister. Over all, I bought five pieces and am happy with all of them. I was assisted both days by Vicky -- a very knowledgeable sales woman who knew the stock extremely well and spoke excellent English. She also came down on some prices as I bought more. However, part of my shopping list included harder to find stones which Gems Gallery was unable to assist me with finding. I ended up at a smaller store in the night bazaar -- Princess Jewelry -- across the street from the McDonalds. There they wrote down descriptions of what was required and were able to produce three or four excellent specimens for me to choose from the next day. Over all -- Gems Gallery is excellent. They will even pick you up at your hotel and return you with no obligation. However, if what you are searching for is not in stock, don't fear going else where.

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek in 2006-2007
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Royal Pavilion
The Royal Flora Ratchaphruek was a flower festival held 1 November 2006, to 31 January 2007, in the Thai city of Chiang Mai that drew 3,781,624 visitors. It was one of the grand celebrations being hosted by the Royal Thai Government in honor of King Bhumibol, the world’s longest reigning monarch.
The Ratchaphruek (Cassia fistula L.) or Golden Shower Tree is the national flower of Thailand. It is also named "Khun" or "Chaiyaphruek". The reason that the Ratchaphruek is used to symbolize the nation lies in color: its yellow blossoms match the yellow of Buddhism; furthermore, the Thai people regard yellow as the color of the King as well. Moreover, all golden shower trees bloom at the same time; this unity in flowering is felt to reflect the unity and identity of Thais.
The event was located in 80 hectares of land at the Royal Agricultural Research Center in Mae Hia sub-district, Mueang district, Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. The 92 days of the expo featured 30 international gardens reflecting nations such as Japan, South Korea, Belgium, Netherlands, South Africa, and Canada; more than 2.5 million trees of 2,200 species of tropical plants and flowers are presented to the world in this exhibition. The AIPH, the Association of International Horticultural Producers, gave this expo A1 status, its highest level; such an exhibition occurs only once a year throughout the world. In addition, a host country can only hold one such exhibition once a decade.
The festival included many highlights to attract tourists:
Gardens for the king There were two features in this zone: one was International gardens, which were presented by 30 participating nations and covered 21,000 square meters; the other was Corporate gardens, which covered 27,475 square meters, and were presented by both Thai state enterprises, and domestic and international major corporations.
Ho Kham Royal Pavilion This building featured Lanna architecture, the architectural style of northern Thailand; inside, visitors saw pictures of King Bhumibol's works and his dedication.
Thai Tropical Garden The enormous 100,000-square-meter garden showcased the diversity of tropical horticulture: fruit varieties, plants, flowers, herbs, and rare plants.
Expo Plaza This was the focus of the exposition's fun-filled activities, amenities, and services. Visitors were able to purchase products from the Royal Projects and authentic local products from Chiangmai such as handicrafts, paper umbrellas, and souvenirs.
Cultural shows A total of 45 cultural shows from various regions of Thailand were performed here, including traditional music and dance. In addition, cultural performances from other nations were presented in this place.
The Thai government had expected an average of 20,000 visitors per day, with over 100,000 visitors on a crowded day, and 3 million visitors in total to attend the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006. At the exposition's conclusion, organizers claimed that the exposition had injected 27 billion baht into the regional economy.
The Thai government has proposed transforming the site of the exposition into a permanent training center. Despite some complaints of corruption and substandard facilities, organizers believed the exposition achieved its goals of promoting tourism and developing Thai horticultural industries1.

Bhubing palace,Doi Suthep, Doi Pui - Chiangmai

THE BHUBING PALACE (ROYAL WINTER RESIDENCE) IN CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
Tina Noga
The Bhubing Palace is located on Doi Buak Ha, about 4 km behind Doi Suthep (22 km from the center of Chiang Mai city) in Chiang Mai Province. It is the royal winter palace in Chiang Mai where the Thai king stays with his family during seasonal visits to the northern part of the country. The palace is also the royal guesthouse for prominent State visitors from abroad. In the past the king welcomed or granted royal audience to State visitors only in Bangkok.
The palace was built in 1961. The building started initially with only the royal resident building and the guesthouse. The other buildings were additionally built on later dates. I didn’t find the palace very spectacular but it is surrounded by beautiful flower gardens.

When you or your couple walking along the garden, it is like your are walking along our royal footprint also they also open music along which most of the music has been composed by our king. The dancing water fountain is synconized with the music.

Phra Tamnak Bhubing Rajanives was built in northern Thai architectural style called “Reun Mu” (Group of Houses). The building sits on stilts. The upper floor is the royal residential area while the ground floor houses the royal entourage. The building master plan was designed by Prince Samaichalerm Kridagara while the building was designed by Mom Rachawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri. The construction of the Palace was undertaken by the Crown Property Bureau, under the supervision of Prince Samaichalerm Kridagara, assisted by Mom Rachawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri and Mr.Pradit Yuwapukka. General Luang Kampanath Saenyakorn, the Privy Councilor was assigned to lay foundation stones on 24 August 1961 at 10:49 hrs.
The Construction took 5 months to complete. The first rayal visitors to stay at the Palace were King Federick the Ninth and queen lngrid of Denmark on their royal visit to Thailand in January 1962.

Doi Pui - Hmong Tribal Village in Chiang Mai

Doi Pui - Hmong Tribal Village
Chiang Mai

Doi Pui - Hmong Tribal Village is located on Doi Suthep, a 1676 meter high mountain that is the focal point of Doi Suthep and Doi Pui National Park. The village is about 4 kilometers away from Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep and despite being a key tourist attraction, and therefore probably not as authentic as it could be, it still offers an insight into how Thailand’s tribes live. The villagers wear traditional Hmong clothes, sell traditional Hmong handicrafts, and live in traditional Hmong-style homes. However, those looking for a less contrived view of the Hmong may have to go deeper into Chiang Mai! Worth a visit if you have the time. A visit to the Tribal Village is often combined with a visit to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep and some of the waterfalls in the area, as well as a jaunt to the Hilltribes Museum.

How to get there: A number of tours are available to the Hmong Tribal Village and related destinations. However, if you want to get there alone, you will need to go to Doi Suthep then carry on to Phu Ping Palace, and then on to Doi Pui. However, Songtaews to Doi Suthep and from Doi Suthep to the village are probably your best bet for convenience.

Chiang Mai : Doi Suthep

By Benjamin Malcolm

Taxi Chiangmai: 0816172116 (oversea ++66 81 6172116) Patrick, Local with English speaking

There are plenty of legends surrounding the mountaintop temple of Doi Suthep. Stories from long ago tell tales of a wandering 14th-Century monk and a dying elephant, a hermit and of villagers coming together to build a road to a holy shrine. Combined with the physical aura of the place, these stories weave a magic concoction for northern-bound travellers.

Rising 1676 metres above the city of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is one of the most revered religious destinations in Thailand and is often packed with interested onlookers, especially when the weather is cooler and the days crisp and clear.

But first a legend. A 14th-Century monk from Sukhothai had a vision one day - he saw a fire and when he followed it, he found a relic (apparently a bone) from the Buddha himself. He took the relic to his king, but it failed to reproduce its magical powers and the king lost interest.

However, King Keu Naone of the Lanna Kingdom heard of the monk and invited him north to Chiang Mai and offered to enshrine the relic. The building was completed and preparations were made to house the relic. When the time came to do this, the relic broke in two, leading the king to make a new plan.

At the northern gate of the city, now known as Chang Puak (white elephant gate), he placed half of the relic on the back of a sacred white elephant and sent it off into the wilderness.

The elephant headed due west, climbed slowly up the slopes of Doi Suthep, trumpeted a last call and then dropped dead.

On that spot, legend goes, the temple was built in 1383. Doi Suthep is actually named for a legendary hermit, named Sudeva, who lived on the slopes. Before this, about 1,000 years ago, it was still known as Doi Aoy Chang (Sugarcane Elephant Mountain).

It is easy enough to get to Doi Suthep. Public transportation may be used to travel the road 16 kilometres northwest out of Chiang Mai, past Chiang Mai University and ascend the winding road up the mountain to the base of the temple.

There are two choices once you have reached the base of the temple - either hike up the 300 steps to the temple gate (admiring the longest Naga staircase in Thailand on the way) or, hop on one of the cable cars and get conveyed to the top. Most opt for the walk.

Once inside Wat Suthep, you are free to wander the grounds, admiring what each section has to offer. Like many temples in Thailand, there are elements of Hinduism mixed in with Buddhism and an intriguing array of statues, including the god Ganesh, peek out from corners, cubby holes and from the sides of temple buildings.

Metal bells, double-stacked, line a couple of walls and are kept busy throughout the day. Signs above the bells admonish visitors "not to push the bell."

The lookout area is the other side from the entrance gate and viewers can gaze down at the city of Chiang Mai and its international airport far below. From here, you have a clear view of the winding Ping River and the surrounding mountains.

In the middle of the temple is the sacred square cloister area, where, upon shedding shoes and ascending another dozen steps, visitors can see the Lanna-style, copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tiered gold umbrella. It is considered one of the holiest areas in Thailand. Monks inside are kept busy blessing the devout with holy water and the smell of incense and burning candles fill the senses as you circumnavigate the cloister.

Another more recent legend about Doi Suthep concerns a monk in the 1930's. In 1934, there was still no road leading up the mountain and the faithful had to make the arduous climb in order to visit the temple. Pra Krubra Srivichai, a local monk, thought that the temple needed better access and organized the local villages in order to build a road.

He asked each village to construct 10 metres and with this plan in hand, the locals finished the job in just six months. A recent expansion of the road covered over plaques honouring each village, but a statue honouring Srivichai still remains, at the base of the mountain. It is believed to be good luck to pay homage to him before ascending Doi Suthep.

Many who visit don't realize that Doi Suthep is actually one part of the larger Doi Suthep National Park. The National Park encompasses 261 square kilometres. Evergreen hills, mixed deciduous and pine forest are all represented at the park and there are over 300 bird species and nearly 2000 species of fern and flowering plants that thrive there. During the late day and early morning, the bird species are much in evidence, flitting around the periphery of the temple.

Phra Tamnak Phu Phing, the vacation palace for the royal family, is also in the immediate area and is often included in tours to Doi Suthep, along with a visit to a local Hmong hill-tribe village.
Thanks to the industriousness of Srivichai, it is now easy to pay a visit to Doi Suthep, although the old hiking trail does still exist for those yearning for a more difficult challenge. Either way, the beauty, the holiness and the legends of Doi Suthep wait to be explored.

loved the rubies, need to replace

They will even pick you up at your hotel (Trasportation - 081 617 2116 or oversea phone 66 81 617 2116) and return you with no obligation. However, if what you are searching for is not in stock, don't fear going else where.
