When we walked up the path towards a bridge we were treated to the delightful sight of an elephant taking a bath in the river and having the time of its life doing so.
A mahout was on hand to give it a good scrubbing and the elephant happily rolled around on the riverbed as the water rushed round it, turning the animal into some sort of animated boulder with a snorkel.
Bath time over, we followed elephant and mahout into the camp where a display was later put on embracing everything from darts, football and painting to more traditional elephant pastimes where they showed off their immense strength and skills handling baulks of timber.
There can be few more adorable things than a baby elephant and we were able to go to separate enclosures and see two, one aged a year and the other just seven months.
Their whiffly trunks were keen to explore every new sight, sound or visitor and they had plenty of space to walk round without going too far from Mum who was always nearby.
Rides out into the surrounding forest and jungle were possible, not the "round the car park" rides offered by some attractions but more than an hour right out into the surrounding countryside while visitors could also marvel at the huge amounts of food elephants consume.
It was quite amusing to see one couple's ride briefly diverted while their elephant pulled up a great chunk of undergrowth for a quick snack.
There were good quality toilet facilities available and the overall visit was very enjoyable.
