Lord Ganesha is a widely revered God in Thailand, and more so by those who are in arts related careers..
In Chiang Mai's Doi Lor sub-district, some 41 kilometers from the city, one can find a private museum dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The museum, which is called Ganesha Museum, is owned by Banthorn Teerakanont, who is one of Thailand's leading devotees of Lord Ganesha.
Ganesha is a Hindu deity who has the head of an elephant and is the son of Lord Shiva. He is believed to be the God of accomplishment, wisdom and wealth. He is also the destroyer of evil and obstacles. Many Thais, who are born on Tuesday, consider Lord Ganesha to be their birthday God and worship on that day.
At the Ganesh Museum in Chiang Mai, you can find a main museum building, a Ganesha shrine and a gift shop. The museum building has three rooms that exhibit around 700 Ganesha statues, paintings, gemstone pictures and Ganesh images made from metal, wood and papier mache. The figurines of Ganesha are housed in the first and second room of the museum building and have been amassed from different countries like India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Myanmar and Burma. The third room is the worshipping room which features large statues of Lord Ganesha and his mice.
The Ganesha Museum holds a worshipping ceremony once a year and around 300 devotees attend this ceremony. Many devotees also bring their Ganesha statues to be blessed during this ceremony.
At the gift shop one can buy Ganesha figurines, incense, worshipping items and T-shirts.
