 Silk home products
We will be in Bangkok in Sep and Nov and also in Chiang Mai in Oct. We are interested in knowing if Thai silk products are designed mostly for use in Thailand; meaning designs sourced from their culture (symblos, elephants, dragons etc) or do they have artsy neutral designs that would work well in bedrooms and living rooms in the west? We have been in Bangkok before, but never quite located what we needed. Our googling attempts have observed western dealers on line.
Specifically we are looking for straighforward bedspreads, cushion covers, dining table cloths and runners, place settings etc.
If you have first hand experience with these products and stores, kindly reply with the names and locations. We need to zero in. If any are tourist traps masquerading as "snoby emporoiums" with gross mark ups, please advise if bargaining is possible.
Most greatful!

1. Re: Silk home products
You can get both traditional and modern designs. The best quality product is Jim Thompson Central World, Suriwong, etc), with prices to match. Central department store (Central Chidlom, Central World, Central Ladprao etc) has a limited range. Silk comes in all kinds of qualities and the old adage is "You get what you pay for". You find silks in MBK and markets like Chatuchak, but they won't be high quality.
Central World, Siam Paragon, Gaysorn Plaza will have high end selections - you need to wander around these big malls.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Phuket
Also, you mention you will be in Chiang Mai in October.
You could check out the Airport Plaza there were a few homeware shops in there.
Also at the Worrawot markets area in Chiang Mai there is a couple of wholesale shops selling the tablerunners, wall hangings. There prices were definately cheaper than the Airport Plaza.
As for cushion covers, they are sold everywhere in Bangkok & Chiang Mai.
If you visit the Mong hilltribe village in Chiang Mai they sell embroided cushion covers. Very nicely done explaining their history.
Have fun with your mission. Also the colours are brilliant. CJ

3. Re: Silk home products
There are some wonderful silk products in Chiang Mai, rule of thumb is that the more you pay the more chance you have of getting Thai silk (4ply) rather than Chinese silk, and they will be generic in design. I export to Australia and always look for designs that dont represent an Asian theme.
Some good places to look are:
Shinawatra Silk, 18 Huai Kaeo Road (stunning products, not cheap)
Vila Cini, 30-34 Charoenrat Road, Chiang Mai (my favorite store for silk, the designs are wonderful, they also have a lovely range of Table Runners etc)
Vaniche Silk Products
Showroom : Wholesale / Retail
Chiangmai: Nimman Promenade, Nimmanahaemin Rd, Soi 4
Tel: 665-3213-910 (nice products, from memory cheaper than the previous two companies, they also now do a lovely range of jewellery)
Thai Silk Village Co.,Ltd.
120/11 Moo 3, Sanklang
Chiangmai-Sankampaeng Rd., Km.3 Sankampaeng
Chiang Mai (I have never shopped here but am told they have a large selection)
Shinawatra (both Bangkok and Chiangmai),Vila Cini and Vaniche are also available in Bangkok. You would have to do a Google for the address. If you need a driver in Chiang Mai that is familar with these places to shop
Regards
