We visted in February on a Monday and actually entered the museums at about 1.30pm - no queue at all!!
I would definately recommend taking a guided tour - I would have had no idea what i was looking at without one. we went with Rome Walks Inc, World Travel - it ended up just being me and my boyfriend on the tour - an extra treat. Kim the guide was very friendly and knowledgable and made the whole experience much more interesting than i think it would have otherwise been.
We were also lucky enough to get on the scavi tour - possibly the highlight of the trip for me

Booked a tour with "Italy with Us" World Travel and had a guide called Jay. He was fantastic - huge general history knowledge as well as church history. Managed to get into the museums at 8am and spend ages in the Sistine Chapel when there were very few there. Also got to see the Niccoline chapel by special request. This is not generally open to the public. We had a small group (only 8 of us on the tour). Even though we had a knowledge of some church history, Jay made everything so much more interesting and managed to keep us enthralled for 4 hours! Definitely worth getting up early for!

No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to this site. It is absolutely beautiful and the historical significance is amazing. No matter what your religious views, it is awe inspiring. Taking a guided tour is the best way to see the highlights and appreciate what you are seeing. It also allows you to bypass a 2 - 4 hour lineup. The tour World Travel we took picked us up at our hotel and took us back. Well worth the extra cost.

The Vatican museums were great because of the huge collection of historic artifacts and artworks that it housed. It was also interesting just to walk around within the Vatican walls, since every building is itself a piece of artwork. The line to get in was HORRIBLY long, and I'm sure is brutal in the summer heat, so we went with a guided tour group - World Travel, which gave the benefits of jumping the line and having someone to explain the historical significance of everything to us. It wouldn't have meant nearly as much if we just looked at paintings and sculptures as we walked through, instead of having the story behind them from our guide. Tour groups are easy to find, because they have representatives that walk the streets outside the Vatican walls and shout advertisements, just be sure to ask a lot of questions to make sure that they are legitimate. On a personal note, PLEASE be respectful and remember that the Vatican is a holy place for many people and not just a tourist destination; It was extremely offensive to see people interrupt mass, climb over guardrails, or take photos in the most sacred places where it was banned, just for a photo op.
