We create this very special and unique product called Thai silk in our village with great pride and care. In fact there are times after making their Thai silk fabric or Thai silk scarves, some of the lady weavers in our Thai Silk Magic group do not want to sell them as they love their finished product and are so proud of it.
Thai Silk Weaving - A Traditional Craft
The art of making Thai silk started where we live, in north-eastern Thailand. The handmade silk fabric weaving here in our village is a traditional craft. We have been making Thai silk in our village, near the city of Si Sa Ket in north- eastern Thailand, for almost 100 years. And our great-greatgrandmothers for many years before that! Most of our unique handmade processes, 100% natural dye coloring, patterns and designs have been passed down to us through the generations...and we have some "closely guarded secret" processes that enable us to create such original products.
Thai Silk is a very natural and unique textile product and has become a major sort after fabric in nearly all department stores around the world. It has distinctive features that differentiate it from other silks from China, India, Korea and Italy.
A Fashion Fabric
Thai silk also has a wonderful international reputation as one of the finest silks in the world. Our handmade silk weaving techniques and processes only add to the romance and attraction of this highly impressive fabric.
Unique Characteristics of Thai Silk
- Did you know that silk is a protein and does not conduct heat?
- This makes it an extremely good insulator and so it’s not just great for clothes but silk is even used for insulating electric wires and astronaut’s clothing.
- Thai Silk is an amazing fabric as it can be warm to wear because it prevents body heat from dissipating but as well, when used for light-weight clothing like lingerie, it is very cool fabric as the fine fiber permits air to pass through the material.
- Did you also know that a silk filament has a greater tensile strength than steel?
- Other silks each have their own features and characteristics.
- Pure Thai silk fabric differs from western, Japanese and Chinese silk in its texture and distinctive tie-dyed sheens.
The weaving of the pure Thai silk fabric, like all hand woven fabrics, has two distinct sets of threads called the warp and the weft.
These are interlaced with each other to form the Thai silk fabric. The warp threads run lengthways of the piece of fabric and the weft runs across from side to side. Using a mix of different colors, it is the weft that gives pure Thai silk fabric its amazing natural sheen and texture.
