The Mae Ngat Dam & Reservoir is north of ChiangMai and, simply because there is so much to see and in ChiangMai, is often missed especially as ChiangMai is frequently a last stop for a couple of days following a seaside holiday. The national park entrance to the Dam and lakeside is on the west side of the dam. You will have to pay a fee to go into the national park, which essentially means go on the lake but if you are just going to eat and drink at one of the restaurants sited just there you should be allowed in free, but you will need to tell the staff that is what you are doing. Going for a trip on the extensive lake is well worth it. you can have a boat take you to a House boat where you can enjoy food and drink. You can also stay overnight at the houseboats which is a worthwhile experience. My favourite for both a day trip to eat and drink or overnight is the Eakachai houseboat. You will see signs for it when you go to the dam area. The boats for it leave down past the dam-side restaurants. For a quick gimps of the reservoir you can go to the dam on the East side and look. Very worthwhile trip

I recently went to Mae Ngat Reservoir to enjoy a weekend with friends. We really enjoyed our time there. We stayed on the houseboats next to Eakachai. We took out our own food and drinks, and only had breakfast out there. The views were great, and sunrise was magical!

The boat ride is half the fun. Nice place to relax, and enjoy a day out. Kayaking, swimming. Nice food at the Ekachai House Boats.

We decided to visit this lake on a hot day so we could cool off a bit. On arrival a longtail boat took us to one of the floating guesthouses where we had lunch (delicious thai style fresh fish) and rented canoes. It was lovely an quiet as we went during the week but the owner of the guesthouse said it's much more crowded during the weekend and high season.

This is a great day out from Chiang Mai. The dam is very beautiful, surrounded by hills and mountains, with floating restaurants. It's about an hour's drive from Chiang Mai, inside a national park. Once at the dam, you take a long tail boat to one the floating restaurants. Ekachai is the one I like best. Here you can eat wonderful food, swim, kayak or just relax.
