Very friendly services and warm welcome like home especially take good care by owner. Nice and quiet area but just a few minute drive which you could be in busy area and local market. Decoration by sort of wooden furniture are so cool...worth to stay for short and long stay either a couple or family
Room Tip: Swimming view room

“A real gem”

I found Opium when searching Wotif for a bargain and what a bargain it proved to be. The new hotel (opened late 2012) may be a little out of the way, but it compensates with lovely rooms, wonderfully friendly staff, and a pretty nice recreation area out front.
The rooms are spacious and kitted out with all of the mod cons including a large fridge, a big flat screen TV, a microwave, and a desk. The shower near blasts you out of the room with pressure and there's also a tub for relaxing. With reduced rates for weekly or monthly stays, I'd love to return to the Opium someday.
The staff really make the place stand out. Two gentlemen in particular went above and beyond to be helpful even after we'd checked out. Whether it was giving advice or driving us somewhere, they provided an exemplary level of service.
The sole black marks against the place would be the mediocre breakfast and the fact it's just a tad far removed from the Old City around which Chiang Mai's tourism scene seems to revolve. But they're small things. I really enjoyed my time at the Opium.

“Service with smile”

The opium is a new hotel which started operation by end of 2012. We had a good stay here, the room is spacious and clean. I believe that the jewel of this family run hotel is the service. Every morning or every time we step into the hotel, we will be welcome with warm smile. Good job to Boom, X and the rest of the staff. The location is not in the city but not too far, approximately 10mins by tuk tuk. But we enjoy the local market and all the eateries nearby. We will definitely consider The opium if we go back to Chiangmai .

“Step into a Real Lanna Thai Experience”

The Opium was not our first choice when we were looking for hotels, but it is our best choice. We had been looking for a place within the 'old city' but everything was booked. So, we reluctantly booked at The Opium. What a wonderful surprise. The location worked out fine. It is a short TukTuk ride into the 'old city' and still in the city proper. Mr. Neng and Mr. Kid are two great TukTuk drivers who are reliable, very reasonable and a phone call away. I left their numbers at the front desk so other people can take advantage of their consciencous service.
Boom (owner/manager) of The Opium and his staff, Jing, Pe, Pan, Mr. X, Mr. Bank open their hearts as well as the hotel doors to you. I have been coming to Thailand and Chiang Mai for almost 20 years. Thevcharm and kindness Lanna Thai have been renouned for but seem diminished in the hustle and bustle of business are alive and well here.
We have been here 4 weeks and will be staying 2 more and I am sad to be leaving. The rooms are pleasantly decorated with ample space and plenty of natural light. We have a one bedroom suite that works beautifully for the two of us. The suite has a small kitchen, nice living area, and spacious bedroom and bath. If we have needed anything, we ask and it appears.
There is a nice small pool that the courtyard of the hotel is organized around. The water is a little chilly for me, having lived most of my life in Florida, but people were happily swimming. There is also a workout area with very nice equipment such as tredmill, stepmaster, universal, and stationary bike.
There are people staying for a month or so as well as those for just one night, but the common thread is friendly openness if it is wanted but unobtusiveness if you prefer your own space. A rare combination. We have made friends with other guests that we will stay in contact with as well as the staff and owner. This has been a rich and beautiful experience. It is a magical place where the lovely facility is just the icing on the cake. Yes, I am at home here and love this charming little place. It reminds me of the Lanna I feel in love with all those many years ago.

“Wouldn't stay elsewhere in CM”

When i booked this hotel there haven't been any reviews on any booking site (i never book hotels below excellent rating). However this was a last minute booking, i was sick and tired of searching so i gave this one a chance. And i'm glad i did.
The reason why the place lacks any reviews is because it's brand new. So new in fact the builders are still on site, doing a few finishing touches, and you can see wires dangling off the walls here and there. This is obviously a great thing, since everything is brand new and polished, furniture shows no sign of wear. Neither does the staff. They are young and enthusiastic people who will do everything to make you feel at home. The hotel offers premium service at a budget price. So reasonably priced hotels in Thailand are usually cockroach nests, with tattered furniture, cold water and bored if not hostile staff, but Opium is impeccably clean and shiny, your room includes all the amenities and services you'd expect (safe, minibar, large LCD TV, airport shuttle, breakfast, pool etc). During my round trip in Thailand, this was definitely the place that gave me the best value for my money.
Hard to find any downsides but if i have to name a few, the location is maybe a bit off (though it also means it's quiet), you need to walk a few hundred meters to reach the main road. If you don't mind walking you can reach the oldtown and its tourist attractions in less than an hour – i did it more than once. But the staff would get you a taxi any time. As for the breakfast, the selection is not very rich yet, thou they are going to improve it.
Should you want to go out for a dinner you'll find some quality establishments with thai and international cuisine just a few meters off of the hotel, in the same street.
