Thailand is Top Destination for Medical/Wellness Tourists

According to reports voiced at a recent Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) seminar in Qatar Thailand currently holds a 38% stake in the world’s medical tourism market, the largest of any country in the globe.

Qatar, the 5th of October 2010: Dr. Surapong Ambhanwong (Phayathai Hospital Chief Medical & International Business Officer) explained that the passage of international patients was currently producing an estimated 920,000 travellers to the Kingdom of Thailand annually, making it the number one destination for medical tourists.



Speaking at the inaugural Medical Health and Wellness Roadshow in Doha, Qatar, Dr. Ambhanwong explained that the scope of procedures being undertaken in Thailand was wide, covering areas such as plastic surgery, joint replacement, cancer treatment, open heart surgery and dental care.

“Many also visit Thailand to seek professional advice for a better quality of life, through Thailand’s many alternative medical centres and hospitals, to help control and reduce the threat of diabetes, cholesterol, obesity and blood pressure,” he said.

The roadshow, organised in conjunction with the TAT, was aimed at promoting Thailand’s expertise and specialisation in providing cutting-edge medical care throughout the world and in particular focusing on the Gulf States.



The initiative will see representatives from Thailand’s leading hospitals and wellness centers visit the Middle East to meet directly with industry professionals and medical travel consultants as well as regional government administrators.

Present at the roadshow, TAT director Pramoth Supyen revealed that Middle Eastern travel to Thailand was constantly on the rise, whether seeking medical care or leisure travel. He stated that the TAT was now focusing its aims on further promoting tourism in the region based on the success of initial cooperation with region governments.

“Thailand proves an attractive option as a medical destination due to the country’s well established industry to provide high quality, cost effective treatment of international standards,” he said “the medical industry has proven itself with the added advantage of providing far superior nursing care, as well as the unique Thai approach and attention to personal care”.

The Thai delegation that visited Qatar from Oman has now left the nation for Bahrain on Tuesday.

Middle-Eastern Arrivals Continue to Grow for Thailand


Thailand continues to see a steady increase in visitor arrivals from the Middle East, the kingdom welcoming a total of 261,657 visitors, representing 22.20 per cent growth, in the first six months of 2010. This comes in spite of the country’s political situation during April/May.

Thailand, the 22nd of September 2010: The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Dubai has been meeting with local travel trade partners on a regular basis to strengthen relations and restore confidence in travel to the kingdom, according to officials.



Numbers have been boosted on the back of TAT Dubai’s TV commercial initiatives promoting “Destination Thailand” on Al Jazeera and Cable TV Showtime Orbit, which cover the entire Middle Eastern region.

The TAT office also launched a “Thailand Summer Special Offer” joint promotion with Etihad Airways, which runs from June through September 2010. The promotion is supported by an online advertising campaign, radio spots and special in-store promotions at various department stores and shopping malls.

In addition, TAT Dubai aims to achieve extensive media coverage in an effort to restore confidence among individual travellers and encourage them to travel to Thailand and is actively generating news and promoting activities via online as well as print media.

The UAE decision to lift the ban on travel to Thailand just in time for the onset of the outbound travel season for the Middle East is expected to boost the flow of tourists into the Kingdom with analyst speculating unprecedented figures for Middle Eastern visitors in 2010.

In conclusion, Qatar Airways has also announced the introduction of additional Doha-Bangkok flights as well as a Doha-Phuket direct flight.

Commencing 1 November 2010, Qatar Airways will be operating an additional flight on its Doha-Bangkok route, raising the total number of flights from two to three per week. The airline has also announced the launch of a daily Doha-Phuket direct flight scheduled to commence on 11 October 2010.

HE’S COMING: Phuket Blues Fest headline act Curtis Salgado has been nominated for a major blues music award.

PHUKET: The Phuket International Blues Rock Festival, now in its sixth year, will return to the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa in Karon from February 25-26.

Curtis Salgado, one of the headline acts to play at the festival, has been nominated for the Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year award at the 2011 Blues Music Awards.

The awards, the blues music equivalent of the Grammys, will be conferred in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 5.

The nomination follows Salgado’s award as Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year for his album “Clean Getaway” last year. Apart from his distinguished career as a soul blues musician, Salgado is well known as the man who inspired and mentored John Belushi for his role in the classic film The Blues Brothers.

Joining Salgado on stage in Phuket along with nine other music greats will be Mason Ruffner, an artist who has gained the respect of icons Bob Dylan and Santana.

Ruffner, from New Orleans, is best known for his track Gypsy Blood, which featured on the Steel Magnolias soundtrack.

The other night, while strolling the sois of Nimmanhaemin we discovered a delightful new restaurant within a group of other restaurants and bars; Tea Tales of Chiang Mai. We were greeted by the charming owner, Olivier. He is an eager–to-please Frenchman who exudes pride in his venture.



A delightful tea shop during the day, this beautifully appointed space becomes an outstanding restaurant at 6:00 p.m. The menu consists of various International dishes…all of which are lovingly created with the French attention to detail and presentation. We had scallops wrapped in bacon and bruschetta with goat cheese and an authentic Indonesian satay as appetizers. What a wonderful way to begin our meal. When the steamed seafood curry ( #21 Hor Mok Ta Lay) arrived we were amazed at the size of the portion and the magnificent presentation.

The chicken and cashew dish ( #24 Kai Pad Med Ma Maung) and the chicken green curry ( #15 Kang Kiow Wan Kai) were other fabulous choices that we made. Fortunately we had saved room for dessert, because the banana banoffee, the diable noir and the tiramisu were beyond wonderful! These irresistible desserts are available during the day, should you decide to just drop by for tea! When we return we will try the “ham and cheese” sandwich served with French Fries…which is called Welsh in Olivier’s native village in France.

There is a full bar and wine menu. Of course, there is a wall full of tea choices to purchase as well. Entrees range in price from 80 Baht to 250 Baht. A pot of tea is 60 Baht. The quality and quantity far surpasses some “Chiang Mai classics” that I have tried! We are were so impressed with this new gem, that we hope you too, will give Olivier and his extremely talented wife, Kanokwan a chance to become a classic of Chiang Mai. You won’t be disappointed…and they will even remember your name! Enjoy! Tea Tales can be found on Nimmanhaemin Soi 9 and is open daily from 9 a.m. to midnight, dinner service begins at 6 p.m.

Kway Swe (Burmese chicken in coconut milk)

A Burmese chicken curry dish this week, but this is not the Khao Soi chicken curry that can be found in Chiang Mai and a few selected restaurants throughout Thailand. This is more spicy and does not have the egg noodle base.

Ingredients Serves4
Chicken skinless, boneless 750 gm
Onions chopped 2 large
Garlic minced 8 cloves
Green chillies (seeded and chopped) 2
Red chilli sliced 1
Fresh ginger minced 1 tspn
Water 1 liter
Turmeric powder 1 tspn
Salt 1 tspn
White pepper ¼ tspn
Vegetable oil 2 tbspns
Thick coconut milk 375 ml
Fish sauce to taste
Coriander, chopped 2 tbspns



Cooking Method

Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and rub with salt and white pepper. Put into saucepan and cover with water, add turmeric and bring to the boil. Remove chicken pieces and reserve the stock.

In the mortar, pound the onion, garlic, ginger and green chillies to a paste and then stir-fry in the wok for five minutes. Add the chicken pieces and fry for another two minutes.

Now add the reserved stock and the coconut milk and simmer until the liquid is slightly thickened and oily. Flavor to taste with salt, then add chopped coriander and sliced red chillies and serve.

ความเป็นมาของกลุ่มเฮาฮักหมา "We Love Dogs"

ก่อนอื่นต้องขออนุญาตเล่าสู่กันฟังอย่างไม่เป็นทางการนะคะ
เรื่องที่มาที่ไปของกลุ่ม ?เฮาฮักหมา? หรือ ?We Love Dogs?
ซึ่งหลายๆ คนอาจจะมีข้อสงสัยว่า กลุ่มเฮาฮักหมา คือใคร และ เกิดขึ้นมาได้อย่างไร

อันที่จริงแล้ว กลุ่มเฮาฮักหมาเกิดขึ้นจากพวกเราผองเพื่อนๆๆๆ ที่คบกันมาตั้งแต่ชั้นอนุบาลโรงเรียน
เรยีนาเชลีวิทยาลัย จ.เชียงใหม่ จวบจนปัจจุบันก็เกือบ 40 ปีแล้ว (โปรดอย่าคาดเดาอายุของพวกเรา)
ในกลุ่มเพื่อนๆ ของเรา ปัจจุบันก็มีภาระหน้าที่การงานที่แตกต่างกันไป ซึ่งนานๆ ครั้ง ก็จะนัดพบปะสังสรรค์
update เรื่องราวชีวิตของแต่ละคน เพื่อนๆ จึงได้รู้ว่า มีเพื่อนของพวกเราคนหนึ่ง นอกจากการทำงานประจำมาทั้งวันแล้ว
ก็จะขับรถกลับไปบ้าน(ระยะทางไปกลับ รวมเกือบ 50 กม.) เพื่อเตรียมอาหารกลับมาแจกจ่ายน้องหมาจรจัดข้างถนน ทุกๆ เย็น..
ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวันเสาร์อาทิตย์..วันหยุด..เพื่อนเราไม่เคยมีวันหยุด.. เวลาพวกเรานัดกันไปเที่ยวต่างจังหวัด..เพื่อนเราไม่เคยได้ไป..
เพราะมีอีก หลายชีวิตที่เฝ้ารออาหารเย็นเพียงวันละ 1 มื้อจากเขาอยู่...

เพื่อนของเราเล่าให้ฟังว่า แต่ก่อนในบริเวณนั้นก็เคยมีสุนัขจรจัดเจ้าถิ่นอยู่หลายตัว
แต่ในวันหนึ่ง มีคนไร้ซึ่งมนุษยธรรมและขาดความเมตตา เรียกพวกพ่อค้าเนื้อสุนัขมาจับไปเกือบหมด
เหลือเพียง 2 ตัว ที่หนีเอาชีวิตรอดมาได้ ปัจจุบันแม้ว่าเหตุการณ์นั้นจะผ่านมาถึง 7 ปีแล้ว แต่สุนัขหนึ่งใน 2 ตัวนั้น
ก็ยังมีอาการหวาดผวา.. กลัวผู้คน.. ไม่ให้จับ.. ไม่เข้าใกล้คน..
ต้องอยู่อย่างหลบๆ ซ่อนๆ ตัวตลอดเวลา

ด้วย ความเมตตาสงสาร เพื่อนของเราจึงนำอาหารมาให้สุนัขที่เหลืออยู่เพียง 2 ตัวนั้นทุกเย็น
รวมทั้งได้พาไปฉีดวัคซีน และทำหมันให้ เมื่อมีคนสังเกตเห็นว่ามีคนให้อาหารสุนัขจรจัดที่นี่
จึงนำสุนัขตัวอื่นๆ มาทิ้งเพิ่มภาระให้อีก จาก 2 ตัว.. เป็น 6 ตัว.. 8 ตัว.. 12 ตัว.. 15 ตัว.. และเกือบ 30 ตัวในที่สุด
(หวังว่าคงไม่มีคนเอามาปล่อยเพิ่มภาระให้เพื่อนเรานะคะ)


ปัจจุบัน ยังโชคดีที่มีผู้ใจบุญอีก 1 คู่ (สามี-ภรรยา) เสนอตัวเข้ามาช่วยแบ่งเบาภาระไปครึ่งหนึ่ง
สรุปว่า สองคู่นี้ก็สลับกันเตรียมอาหารมาเลี้ยงสุนัขเกือบ 30 ชีวิตทุกวัน
หากมีตัวใดตัวหนึ่งเจ็บป่วยก็ต้องช่วยกันพาไปรักษาและออกค่าใช้จ่ายกันเอง
แต่ก็ยังมีผู้ใจบุญบางท่านร่วมสมทบทุนมาบ้างเป็นครั้งคราว

เดือน พฤศจิกายนที่ผ่านมา มีสุนัข 5 ตัว ที่เพื่อนของเราให้อาหารอยู่ถูกทำร้ายอย่างทารุณและถูกกำจัดไปอีกครั้ง...
พวกเราได้ยินข่าวร้ายเช่นนี้ และเห็นเพื่อนของเราต้องรับภาระต่างๆ มากมาย ที่คนอื่นนำมาทิ้งไว้ให้
จึงนัดกันในบ่ายวันหนึ่ง ของเดือนธันวาคม 2553 พวกเราคุยกันว่าอยากจะทำอะไรสักอย่างเพื่อเป็นการช่วยเหลือเพื่อนของเรา
และเพื่อนร่วมโลกสี่ขาผู้ซื่อสัตย์ของเรา และได้ข้อสรุปว่าคงจะต้องเริ่มจากการตั้งชื่อกลุ่มก่อนที่จะเริ่มทำกิจกรรม ต่างๆ ขึ้นมา
โดยช่วยกันคิดและนำเสนอชื่อกลุ่มใน face book หลังจากโหวตแล้วในที่สุดจึงลงเอยที่ชื่อกลุ่ม ?เฮาฮักหมา?
เนื่องจากพวกเราเป็นคนเชียงใหม่ เราจึงต้องการอนุรักษ์ภาษาท้องถิ่นของเรา ?เฮาฮักหมา?
ในภาษาเหนือ แปลว่า ?เรารักสุนัข? หรือ ?We Love Dogs? นั่นเอง

หลัง จากที่ได้ชื่อกลุ่มเฮาฮักหมามาแล้ว เราจึงช่วยกันสรุปกิจกรรมต่างๆ ในรอบแรก ที่จะช่วยหารายได้มาช่วยเพื่อนของเรา
และก็ลงเอยที่กิจกรรม ดังนี้ค่ะ

1. จัดคอนเสิร์ตการกุศล We Love Dogs
(ด้วยความเอื้อเฟื้อจาก เซเวียร์ ฟลูต สตูดิโอ ที่และเพื่อนๆ นักดนตรีที่มีจิตอาสามาช่วยเล่นให้ฟรีๆ ค่ะ)

2. ทำเสื้อลายการ์ตูนน้องหมาน่ารักๆ ขาย
(ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากเพื่อนของเพื่อนเราคนหนึ่งชื่อ น้องบี ในการให้เครดิตจ่ายทีหลัง)

3. ทำกระเป๋าผ้าลายน้องหมาน่ารักๆ ขาย
(ได้รับการสนับสนุนจาก น้องบี อีกเช่นกันในการเป็นสปอนเซอร์กระเป๋าผ้าให้ทั้งหมด)

4. ทำโปสการ์ดรูปน้องหมาขาย
(เพื่อนของเราที่ดูแลน้องหมาอยู่เป็นสนับสนุนและทำขึ้นเอง)

5. ประมูลกระเป๋า ?สุนัขทรงเลี้ยง? ใน face book
(ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากเพื่อนของเราที่อยู่ กทมฯ คนหนึ่ง ซึ่งส่งกระเป๋ามาให้ประมูลทั้งหมด 9 ใบ และมอบรายได้ทั้งหมดให้กลุ่มเฮาฮักหมา)


นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีเพื่อนๆๆๆ อีกหลายคนที่คอยช่วยเหลือในหลายๆๆๆ ด้าน ทั้งสนับสนุนเรื่องอาหาร
ที่จะนำมาขายในงาน ช่วยติดโปสเตอร์ ขายบัตรคอนเสิร์ต ฯลฯ ทั้งนี้และทั้งนั้น
ก็นับว่าเป็นความโชคดีอย่างยิ่งที่พวกเรามีเพื่อนๆ ที่น่ารักมากมายหลายฝ่ายมากๆๆๆ
