Chiang Mai : Doi Suthep

By Benjamin Malcolm

Taxi Chiangmai: 0816172116 (oversea ++66 81 6172116) Patrick, Local with English speaking

There are plenty of legends surrounding the mountaintop temple of Doi Suthep. Stories from long ago tell tales of a wandering 14th-Century monk and a dying elephant, a hermit and of villagers coming together to build a road to a holy shrine. Combined with the physical aura of the place, these stories weave a magic concoction for northern-bound travellers.

Rising 1676 metres above the city of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is one of the most revered religious destinations in Thailand and is often packed with interested onlookers, especially when the weather is cooler and the days crisp and clear.

But first a legend. A 14th-Century monk from Sukhothai had a vision one day - he saw a fire and when he followed it, he found a relic (apparently a bone) from the Buddha himself. He took the relic to his king, but it failed to reproduce its magical powers and the king lost interest.

However, King Keu Naone of the Lanna Kingdom heard of the monk and invited him north to Chiang Mai and offered to enshrine the relic. The building was completed and preparations were made to house the relic. When the time came to do this, the relic broke in two, leading the king to make a new plan.

At the northern gate of the city, now known as Chang Puak (white elephant gate), he placed half of the relic on the back of a sacred white elephant and sent it off into the wilderness.

The elephant headed due west, climbed slowly up the slopes of Doi Suthep, trumpeted a last call and then dropped dead.

On that spot, legend goes, the temple was built in 1383. Doi Suthep is actually named for a legendary hermit, named Sudeva, who lived on the slopes. Before this, about 1,000 years ago, it was still known as Doi Aoy Chang (Sugarcane Elephant Mountain).

It is easy enough to get to Doi Suthep. Public transportation may be used to travel the road 16 kilometres northwest out of Chiang Mai, past Chiang Mai University and ascend the winding road up the mountain to the base of the temple.

There are two choices once you have reached the base of the temple - either hike up the 300 steps to the temple gate (admiring the longest Naga staircase in Thailand on the way) or, hop on one of the cable cars and get conveyed to the top. Most opt for the walk.

Once inside Wat Suthep, you are free to wander the grounds, admiring what each section has to offer. Like many temples in Thailand, there are elements of Hinduism mixed in with Buddhism and an intriguing array of statues, including the god Ganesh, peek out from corners, cubby holes and from the sides of temple buildings.

Metal bells, double-stacked, line a couple of walls and are kept busy throughout the day. Signs above the bells admonish visitors "not to push the bell."

The lookout area is the other side from the entrance gate and viewers can gaze down at the city of Chiang Mai and its international airport far below. From here, you have a clear view of the winding Ping River and the surrounding mountains.

In the middle of the temple is the sacred square cloister area, where, upon shedding shoes and ascending another dozen steps, visitors can see the Lanna-style, copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tiered gold umbrella. It is considered one of the holiest areas in Thailand. Monks inside are kept busy blessing the devout with holy water and the smell of incense and burning candles fill the senses as you circumnavigate the cloister.

Another more recent legend about Doi Suthep concerns a monk in the 1930's. In 1934, there was still no road leading up the mountain and the faithful had to make the arduous climb in order to visit the temple. Pra Krubra Srivichai, a local monk, thought that the temple needed better access and organized the local villages in order to build a road.

He asked each village to construct 10 metres and with this plan in hand, the locals finished the job in just six months. A recent expansion of the road covered over plaques honouring each village, but a statue honouring Srivichai still remains, at the base of the mountain. It is believed to be good luck to pay homage to him before ascending Doi Suthep.

Many who visit don't realize that Doi Suthep is actually one part of the larger Doi Suthep National Park. The National Park encompasses 261 square kilometres. Evergreen hills, mixed deciduous and pine forest are all represented at the park and there are over 300 bird species and nearly 2000 species of fern and flowering plants that thrive there. During the late day and early morning, the bird species are much in evidence, flitting around the periphery of the temple.

Phra Tamnak Phu Phing, the vacation palace for the royal family, is also in the immediate area and is often included in tours to Doi Suthep, along with a visit to a local Hmong hill-tribe village.
Thanks to the industriousness of Srivichai, it is now easy to pay a visit to Doi Suthep, although the old hiking trail does still exist for those yearning for a more difficult challenge. Either way, the beauty, the holiness and the legends of Doi Suthep wait to be explored.

loved the rubies, need to replace
By scott honn, 1/13/08
The store itself is wonderful! I took my time and my sales rep Pong was very patient with me. I even had to come back a second time to pick up a few more things and brought a friend with me and he was very impressed with their knowledge of products and price. we both left very satisfied and were ready to get home to show off our items. I now need to get in touch with the Gem Gallery as my items were stolen in a break-in and I want to replace them. Would anyone that reads this have an email address for them? Thanks JJH Texas

Very pleasant service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/19/07
I have now purchsed 3 items from gems gallery and the service on all visits was thorough, attentative and very friendly. The jewellry is very traditional gemstone type-nothing too arty here but they will make to your specifications. It is worth bargaining because they can drop the price for many reasons but remember that these ladies are making a commission for their sales. Victoria and Angela can both be recommended as saleswomen.

Attention Silver Jewellery Lovers
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/12/04
If it's silver jewellery that you are after, the gems gallery at Bangkok had an abundance of beautiful pieces with different stones. They ranged from very elegant to big and chunky. I also visited the gem gallery in Phuket but they didn't have a very good range of silver. They only had large chunky rings, not small delicate ones. The staff are fantastic, speak excellent English and of course the free drinks go down a treat on a hot humid day. Transport was also free to and from our hotel.

From $25 to $700 -- happiness for all on the shopping list.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/23/04
Gems Gallery is the Wal-Mart of Thai jewelry stores. Like the ubiquitous super centers dotting the USA, the size of the facility and the variety and array of available merchandise has to impress. Also like wally world -- the prices are good and the value consistent. While in Chiengmai, I made two trips. On the first, I trusted them to replace the stone on my Naval Academy class ring. I chose a black sapphire and it turned out beautifully. The next day when I returned to pick up the ring, I shopped for gifts ranging in price from $25 for a modern garnet pendant with matching silver snake chain for the girl friend of my baby brother to $700 for gorgeous yellow sapphire, topaz, amethyst, and garnet fall earrings to match a lariat necklace bought at the Phuket store last year by my sister. Over all, I bought five pieces and am happy with all of them. I was assisted both days by Vicky -- a very knowledgeable sales woman who knew the stock extremely well and spoke excellent English. She also came down on some prices as I bought more. However, part of my shopping list included harder to find stones which Gems Gallery was unable to assist me with finding. I ended up at a smaller store in the night bazaar -- Princess Jewelry -- across the street from the McDonalds. There they wrote down descriptions of what was required and were able to produce three or four excellent specimens for me to choose from the next day. Over all -- Gems Gallery is excellent. They will even pick you up at your hotel (Trasportation - 081 617 2116 or oversea phone 66 81 617 2116) and return you with no obligation. However, if what you are searching for is not in stock, don't fear going else where.

Thai Silk Village, Chiangmai is the place you can find all kinds of Thai silk products, best quality of classic and elegant designs

THAI SILK VILLAGE, Chiengmai : Thai SilkVillage Co.,Ltd. was established in October 1991 (formerly known as Le Bombyx Societe Anonyme) and quickly became a famous one-stop Thai Silk shopping destination for Chiang Mai visitors. Since 1997, our company has expanded into overseas markets.
Starting by exporting our products to Asian countries, and to USA and Europe (France, Spain and Italy) later on. Now we employ more than 85 people in our office and factory. We specialize in manufacturing and exporting of pure hand woven Thai Silk. Thai Silk Village is the place where you can find all kinds of Thai Silk products in classic and elegant designs, and of the best quality.

Hillary Clinton's famous fashion sense is clearly being influenced by all her globetrotting. The pantsuit-loving secretary of state -- in Manhattan yesterday for a speech at the Asia Society -- hit up the museum's gift shop afterward and fell in love with an unflattering-looking, $265 iridescent Thai silk "cocoon vest." "I've got to get one of those," Clinton cooed when she saw the one-size-fits-all vest, which has a high neckline and is sewn with elastic pleating for a stretchy effect. Her color choice of jade was out of stock, so the store agreed to order it for her. She also "eyed a silk turquoise, $120 cascading scarf," we're told.

The suitable time for play with the Tigers should be around 10.00 AM. until 06.00 PM.

We know that you care so let’s look at the facts.

Hi my name is Jenny, I am a 28 year old English visitor to Chiang Mai and I love Tigers so
much I have been coming here every day. (23rd June 2009). I have learnt a lot and understand
your concerns as I had them myself. If I can I
would like to help Tiger Kingdom and all its
customers by looking at the worries that may
concern people regarding the tigers and help to
look at things a little closer.
I have seen how Tiger Kingdom has had to put
up with a lot of negativity from people in the
past.
As an independent, whom has had the great
privileged of spending a good few full days here
I have decided it is about time someone set the
record straight. Below are FACTS about the
tigers that may help you understand why they act
the way they do in captivity and what the
trainers here at tiger kingdom are doing to make
everyones experiences (tigers and customers
alike) safe and happy. I hope you can find it
helpful.
What are the marks on the tigers skin/fur?
Tiger Kingdom does not agree with declawing. The scars and cuts you see on some of the
tigers faces and body's are caused by play fighting amongst their brothers and sisters.
Tigers skin is quite thick and they sometimes don't realise how deep a cut is until a little while
after it has happened.
Although the trainers strongly discourage any play activity with people they do encourage play
with each other. It's important that the tigers are happy and can find an outlet for their energy
so in the late evenings and sometimes during the day if its not too hot the trainers use
coconuts, leaves and corn husks to stimulate play between the tigers.
Play is rough and usually all of the tigers get involved at once so cuts and scratches are
nearly always inevitable.
The claws are clipped but never removed so minor injuries are treated with creams and
sometimes sprays to help the healing process.
Why do you use sticks with the tigers?
Sticks are held by trainers at all times for safety. From a very early age the cubs are taught
that biting and clawing are not permitted. This has to be instilled in them every day for the
rest of their lives, it is the only way it can make it possible for a human to be in the same
enclosure as a man eating animal.
The use of electric shock, whips, chains, declawing, drugging and food deprivation/reward are
also methods that could be used on a tiger but Tiger Kingdom believes the method of "nose
tapping" is the only method that reduces the harm to the tigers, and remains a successful way
of preventing human and tiger injury.
If a tiger injures a human it usually calls for the animal to be put down. An uncontrollable tiger
is just as much a danger to itself as it is to the customer. A human may survive a tiger bite
but the tiger most certainly wouldn't be allowed to live after such an incident! Nobody wants
to put a tiger down just because a customer wanted it to be free to play with them!
The sticks are not sharp and do not cause cuts.
As the tigers get older they learn that the stick is a warning. It is used when face to face eye
contact or threatening behaviour is shown by the tiger, but as they mostly sleep during the
busiest parts of the day a trainer will usually bang it on the fence or something nearby to let
the tiger know they are approaching and that aggressive behaviour will be met with a hard
knock to the nose. This technique is also used in training aggressive dogs and other biting
animals except that for these animal using a finger or hand is the preferred method. Not
something I would suggest with tiger with its size and power! If cats are to be handled, they
must be trained not to play with people the same as they play with each other. If a cat struck
or bit us the same as they would another cat in play, we would not last very long. They must
be taught that our skin is like tissue paper compared to theirs.
Why do the trainers/photographers wake the tigers up from their sleep to
have pictures taken?
Because without customers the tigers would starve.
What the customer wants they usually get! Its the same story in every business in every
country! If all the customers wanted to do was to stand/sit next to a tiger while it was
sleeping peacefully then it would make for a less tired tiger and probably a happier keeper
too, but for the most part customers will not settle for just a touch. Provided it is safe to do
so the trainers will try and position the tiger so that the face can be seen and the customer
can sit comfortably in shot.
Customers are important to the tigers lives. No government funding is provided and hey rely
on the income from the encounters to feed and pay for vets bills ect. Customers want to show
their friends and family's wonderful pictures of them enjoying the intimacy of a one on one
with a powerful and majestic animal. It is determined by the majority that dictates the need for
the tigers to be woken so many time when they are trying to sleep. If you are happy to be
passive and do not want these types of photos then please say so. It would make life a lot
easier for tiger and keeper.
Why don't you let the cubs lick me they're not hurting me!?
If you have a domestic kitten you'll probably already know that the licking gesture is quite
often followed by a bite and then the furious kicking of claw laden back legs. Its similar with
baby tigers. Sometimes they are just licking but other times you may just find that they want a
bite too, and when they have a hold they don't really want to let go. It is part of their training
to discourage any behaviour that may lead to biting or clawing. Even if they are just licking
you it has to be discouraged.
Why don't the tigers wake up when you are stroking them so roughly?
Every day they get plenty of pats, hugs and tummy rubs. So much so that they have almost
become desensitised by it, its normal to them when someone new starts rubbing or heavily
patting them. The tigers have been raised by human contact, are accustomed to handling and
affection, so they want and expect it.
Some customers expect the tigers to be running around all the time. They want to see the
tigers "performing" for them by playing around them and looking good for photos. The trainers
try to make the most of the experience for the customers who want to see this by pushing the
tiger into a better position for a photo or waking them up for a better shot. Customers want to
see them awake even outside the tigers natural waking hours. Because of this the tigers
seldom want to move, always being touched its not surprising that they just want to be left to
sleep. As aggression is met with discipline and the unnecessary expenditure of energy the
tigers have learnt it is far essayer to ignore people.
The other large factor it the time of day. customers seldom visit the park in the early morning
or late evening when the tigers actually want to be awake. Large crowds of people swarm to
the park in the blistering heat of the day and expect ti see these largely nocturnal animals
running jumping and looking into the cameras for the perfect picture. its just not natural for
the tiger to have so much activity at the peak times of our human day!
How can the tigers be safe to go in with?
The tigers have been raised by human contact, are accustomed to handling and affection, so
they want and expect it. They spend their whole life with people and are trained from very
small that biting and clawing are not permitted. Electric wires are placed around the
perimeters of some of the enclosures to discourage fence climbing also.
Don't you think its wrong and unnatural to touch the tigers?
As long as the big cats depend on us for their food they will never be wild. Maybe not tame
either, but we must not fool ourselves by thinking that if we do not touch them, if we do not
let them develop affections for us and us for them, that they will be like wild cats.
If we cannot give them up to the wild because they would die, we must fill that void with
something else they want. We think that something is affection. We know they want affection,
and many want interaction with us. We will not deprive them of something they want that we
can give to them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are just a few facts that may help to set your mind at ease, but you don't have to take
my word for it.
Do your research, read up on tigers, spend more than just a few hours here in the park, turn
up early in the morning (7am) or stay much later (8pm), be around for feeding and activity
time. You can even volunteer, feeding, cleaning and observing tigers and trainers closely
yourself!!
Its not hard to see how well these tigers live when you take a little more time to see.
All my best wishes for a pleasant and better educated experience
