The Starting Place For Every Trip, July 30, 2005
By Blackstone Gates (USA)

My work has provided me with the opportunity to travel a good bit. I am the type of person who wants to get a working background for my destinations, both in terms of history and geographic layout. Because I work, I don't have a great deal of time to spend reading and studying different, often lengthy, travel guides before or during my trips.

Because these guides are concise, beautifully illustrated, relatively compact, and impeccably organized, I cannot recommend highly enough the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guides! The DK Eyewitness Travel Guide is THE guide I buy for every destination. Not only do I get a quick history and background of the destination, but I also will be provided with a visual guide to everything. The visual detail is really what sets the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides apart.

The street maps of common destination points are drawn in dimensional detail so you will visually recognize when you "get there." This is particularly helpful when you don't speak the native language.

The regional maps are colorful and concise. And the drawings associated with attractions like museums allow the traveler who is short on time to quickly see the best of the museum within the time the traveler has to spend.

Each DK Eyewitness Travel Guide has a good summary section in the back with practical information about where to eat, where to sleep, what to do, and how to get around.

While I may supplement the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide with others for a more detailed travel guide, the other guide is only more to read, not more to see. Buy the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide first for any destination.

A great starting place for a trip to Germany, December 17, 2006

This review is from: Germany (Eyewitness Travel Guides) (Paperback)
If you are heading to Germany you must get this guide. It was very helpful in planning a trip from Berlin to Munich and the Bavarian Alps. It lays out towns in Germany and what to see in each. We stopped at some wonderful villages on the way and this guide could not be beat. The region by region analysis is great and is useful for planning if you are only heading to one area. If you are just going to Berlin I would get their Berlin guide as this would be a little too much. Otherwise this is the only guide to use for a trip to Germany.

Great book! I found it very useful!, October 19, 2010

I used this book constantly when in Germany. The maps and pictures are very helpful. Even if you do next to no planning, this book reviews/lists nearly every major attraction. Just flip to whatever interests you and you get a detailed description with some history, directions, hours, etc.

A Pictures is Worth a Thousand Words, June 10, 2010

D&K is a great way to visualize & plan all of our trips to Europe. Rick Steves is fine (I also bought it) but he never give me a sense of the overall look and feel of the locations that we will visit.
I have great interest in fine art and based on what is illustrated in D&K Germany I've added the StaatsGalerie (in Stuttgart) to our upcoming trip to Germany.

Highly recommended...., December 31, 2009

This review is from: Germany (Eyewitness Travel Guides) (Vinyl Bound)
This is the travel guide that I used when I lived in Germany for 3 years and it served me well. Though my copy (circa 2000) is a bit outdated, I used it again when I traveled to Berlin more recently. It is beautifully illustrated, with cut away diagrams of cathedrals, museums, etc. Each German state is covered in depth, city maps are easy to follow, and the hotel/restaurant recommendations are broken down by price range. These guides are unsurpassed for seeing the sights, taking in the culture, history, architecture, etc. There is also an extremely helpful section about local customs, getting around, tipping, regional cuisine, and other boons to the tourist. Backpackers or folks traveling on a budget might want to look at another guide vis a vis lodging and cheap eats. And this book does not have much on night life.

A Must-Buy!, January 11, 2008

This is a wonderful book! I gave it to my father for an upcoming family trip to Germany. It provided us with lots of extra information about specific sites and general history of each town. The graphics and photographs are great and add to the usefulness of the book. A must buy for those traveling throughout Germany!

Wonderful day away from the resorts. As a family of 5 we were well catered for and all instructions were very clear. Kayaking is a good work out for the upper body as well.

The pick up was really early (around 7.15am) and unfortunately the local tour guide hadn't called our hotel and informed us of the pick up time like they were supposed to so we had to just wake up extra early and wait for a call from reception! The excursion was well organised and the guides were all experienced kayakers so you're in safe hands. The food isn't anything special but it fills a hole! The stop off at the island to see the salt water lagoon is a good way of breaking up the day. All in all I would recommend this excursion.

Very professional and good trip, full of fun. The stairs up to the Green Lagoon were a tad steep for me, so not recommended for those with limited fitness.

Restaurant Review: Spring Restaurant, in Paris

Restaurant Review: Spring Restaurant, in Paris

Emmanuel Fradin for The New York Times
By CHRISTINE MUHLKE
Published: April 29, 2011

For a while there, Daniel Rose had a pretty sweet gig. Spring, the young Chicago-born chef’s restaurant in the Ninth Arrondissement of Paris, was booked months in advance. A darling of the press, he was also the dauphin of his tiny open kitchen, which allowed him to chat with his 16 diners as he prepared the market-driven menu on his own slightly disorganized time. Your appetizer might have landed around bedtime, but you felt lucky to be there. (And you were.)

And then Mr. Rose, below, realized it was time to grow up. He relocated Spring, opening the new restaurant in the First Arrondissement last July in an august 17th-century building. The kitchen, with room for four cooks, is still open, permitting Mr. Rose to charm guests with his menschy bonhomie. The quietly casual room has just 28 seats. It still books up months in advance. (The secret is to call in the afternoon for that night’s cancellations.) Downstairs is Spring Buvette, a humming, no-reservations wine bar.

The luxury of a team has allowed the 33-year-old Mr. Rose’s food to grow up, too. During a December visit, the multicourse menu — ours included seven — was an impressive journey through the early-winter market: poached sea bass served room temperature with a snappy vinaigrette, oysters and a cap of frizzled leeks; silky veal “candy” cooked sous-vide and sweetened with butter-poached heirloom beets; rich and crispy shredded veal breast confit, cut with orange.

All three dessert courses — yogurt sorbet with coconut cookies; poached pear with fromage blanc, frangipane and cacao nibs; chocolate ganache with salted caramel, chestnut and a coconut tuile — disappeared without conversation.

Indeed, Spring is such a destination that diners tend to sit in rapt silence. That can lead to between-course conversations in the “So, how’d you get a table?” vein. An older pair from Georgia had become friends with a couple from New York by the second course.

When the Georgia gentleman returned from the downstairs bathroom, which is in the wine bar, he reported to his new friends, eyebrows cocked, “They’ve got a real rock ’n’ roll crowd down there!” Leave it to Daniel Rose to combine the best of both worlds.

Spring Restaurant, 6, rue Bailleul, Paris; (33-1) 45-96-05-72; springparis.blogspot.com. Market menu is 64 euros ($90 at $1.40 to the euro) for at least seven courses at dinner; 38 euros ($53) for three courses at lunch.
