I went with a group to the Elephant Camp in November 2011. When you first arrive there is an "elephant show". About 30 minutes of the elephants doing amazing tricks and an opportunity to get close to them, even swing on their trunks! Then you take a oxen cart ride up into the beautiful farm land. It really was beautiful. You get off at a change over station to pick up the elephant ride. While waitiing there was an excellent native crafts group. Their prices were competitive and they were a little aggressive compared to the usual laid back marketing approach if the genteel Thai people. ( these are "HIll people", a different culture.) . Then you get on the elephants (2 people per elephant) You ride about 40 minutes through the countryside. There is beautiful flora and fauna to see! You also cross in the river twice and THAT is a thriil. I thought this was an excellent taste of Thailand and I saw NO evidence that the elelphant were not treated well.
