About Kata
Kata Beach has to be one of the cosiest and idyllic beaches in Phuket. The beach is sheltered by tall palm trees and is great for snorkelling in the nearby coral reefs and observing the vast array of tropical marine life. This beach can get busy in the high season months over Christmas and New Year, but generally this is a nice beach to relax and unwind. There is also great surf at Kata Beach, where equipment can be hired from the shops adjoining the beach.

The King's Project is a foundation paid for by the King of Thailand to allow people to start up small enterprises which are community oriented. Many of these projects are in northern Thailand and are intended to encourage many of the hill tribe people to find other sources of income than from growing and harvesting opium poppies. This project was initiated more than 20 years ago.

One of the projects we visited was the Mon Cham camping resort not far from Manfred and Jaidieo's house. It is in the hills and has camping facilities in a very majestic site. There's hydro and water and a restaurant which serves food from the produce that is grown by this project. When we were there, a group of people from many other countries including Afghanistan, Uganda, Angola and Korea were visiting for lunch. They were studying the various methods of farming and the implementation of the King's Project

Mon Cham camping resort

From Tripadvisor: We had a delicious lunch of barbecued chicken, sticky rice, lightly battered vegies and Chang beer. One of the things that Maurice found most interesting was the new and the old: they cooked on a propane fired giant wok outside and inside, there was a brand new commercial espresso machine. It looked somewhat out of place: thairoyalprojecttour.com

Chiangmai Hotel Recommendation and List
Recommend to you the new camping site located near the city center of Chaing Mai (around 40 minutes for city center) as this place is known as “Mon Cham” or “Doi Mon Cham”.

In general, Mon Cham, the lonely hill in Mae Rim District, is the agricultural station where the villagers use to cultivate winter plant. Due to this site has its own extraordinary atmosphere, therefore, at the end of the year 2009, Mon Cham has been developed to the new travel spot in Chaing Mai which is called “Mon Cham Camping Resort”. It is easy to reach the hill of Mon Cham because this place is only 40 minutes from Chaing Mai city center and the road to the camping site is quite good for all types of car, 4 wd car is not essential.

When you arrived at Mon Cham Camping Resort, you will discover fantastic scenery of mountain view as you may see from the image together with beautiful winter flowers and vegetables glowed in this site. The camping resort is very convenience because there’re bathroom including hot water available for you and there’re plenty of camping tent available for rent at the rate of 800 baht per night for small size tent (2 person) and 1,200 baht per night for big size tent (4 person). Please note that BBQ, the most famous food for camping, is allowed in this station but you have to pay at the rate of 100 baht per person.

How to go to Mon Cham-Drive to highway number 107 to Mae Rim District
-Turn left at the 17th kilometers to the highway number 1096
-Follow the sign post to “Mon Cham”.

Bangkok and Chiangmai, the world's best city

Bangkok

and Chiangmai,

the world's best city
Voters don’t lie! Bangkok named 'World’s Best City' by Travel + Leisure magazine
And as an added bonus for Thailand's embattled tourism industry, Chiang Mai has grabbed the number two spot in the annual reader poll
9 July, 2010

Thailand’s hotels did well too, with the Peninsula Bangkok rising from No. 66 in 2009 to No. 7 in 2010, while Thai Airways was voted the world’s eighth best international airline. Check out Travelandleisure.com for the full list of 2010 winners.
Bangkok Hotel Recommendation and List

1. Most accomplished monarch

Although His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej spends much of his time outside of Bangkok, the city is pivotal to his (and his ancestors’) reign. Revered as semi-divine by Thais, he’s been more than just a moral compass for his 60-plus years on the throne. His Majesty was born in Cambridge, educated in Switzerland, he speaks multiple languages and holds several agricultural patents.

He composes (and plays) some mean jazz, designs sailboats, is an accomplished painter and photographer, was the first recipient of the UN’s Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award and, oh yeah, is the longest reigning monarch on Earth.

2. Statue with the craziest back story

In 1955, renovators dropped a five-ton 13th-century image of the Buddha, cracking its plaster casing. Horror gave way to awe when they realized that, underneath, it was in fact made of gold, covered up to fool the invading Burmese back in the day.

A brand new temple, Wat Traimit, has just been finished to augment the glitz factor.

Walk around exploring Phuket Old Town

Old Town of Phuket

Read Thai Version ภาษาไทย เดินชมเมืองเก่าภูเก็ต

The old town is the area where the tin traders originally founded the town. The tin miners came here to trade their ore and would then go out and spend their hard earned-money in the local shops and vice dens. It is the area around Dibuk Road, Krabi Road, Thalang Road, Ranong Road and Ratsada Road. The buildings in the old town area are more than 100 years old.

Over recent decades, they have allowed the old town area to degenerate. Many of the charming walkthrough archways had been blocked or bricked up and the ornate doorways fell into disrepair. More recently, the local authorities have started to realise what a treasure they were losing and they are regenerating the area. The archways have been opened-up, buildings restored and overhead wires buried with more work soon to come.

A walk around the old town area is full of interest and an opportunity to admire the Sino-Portuguese architecture.

Sino-Portuguese Architecture

The architecture of the buildings around the old town area is usually described as Sino-Portuguese. That is a mixture of Chinese and European influences.

The buildings are mostly shop houses, three or four stories high. They have a ground floor shop where the family can run their business with living space behind and on the floors above. Many of the buildings are very narrow measuring only 5 meters wide but they can stretch up to 50 meters back. You can most clearly see the Chinese influence in the ornately decorated doors and windows while the European influence is behind the distinctive walkthrough archways.

The Chinese influence comes from the large number of Chinese migrants who came to work in Phuket's tin mining industry and from the strong trading relationship Phuket formed with Penang. At the time, the island of Penang in Malaysia was the major local trading port and the Chinese dominated its business community. If you go to Penang today, you can see some very similar architecture.

The Portuguese reference is misleading. The Portuguese were among the first western traders to have a presence in Thailand but they had left long before Phuket started to flourish. The European influence is mostly British Colonial style imported from Penang, which was a British colony at the time.

Soi Romanee: This delightful little soi between Thalang Road and Dibuk Road is one of the oldest streets in Phuket Town. It was once home to a variety of vice dens catering to the tin miners. It is now a charming little street full of quaint examples of sino-portuguese architecture. There are several charming little bars here where you can sit and soak up the ambience. The local authorities recently tidied away the overhead power lines, which really does improve the experience.

China Inn Cafe: There are a few examplesof Sino-Portuguese architecturewhere you can go inside and look around. One of the best is China Inn Cafeon Thalang Road near the junction with Yaowarat Road. The owner has done a fabulous job of restoring the building to its former glory and has filled it with antiques and mementos from the old tin mining days. The cafe is in the garden at the back of the building. The food is good but a little expensive. The surroundings are a real throwback in time and the owner does not mind if you just want a quick look around and do not eat.

Mansions: As well as the Sino-Portuguese shop houses, you will also see a few colonial style mansions, often described as Sino-Colonial. Two of the best examples are on Krabi Road. On the corner of Satun Road is the impressive Phra Phitak Chyn Pracha Mansion, named after its original owner, Phra Phitak was a Chinese tin baron. This mansion has now opened the Blue Elephant restaurant. Next door is another colonial mansion open to the public. The owner of Chyn Pracha House allows visitors to look around her residence for a small donation.

Temples
There are several beautiful temples and Chinese shrines around the old town area. For more information on temple etiquette and what happens there, see our Temples page.

Put Jor and Jui Tui shrines:
These two Chinese shrines are next to each other towards the western end of Ranong Road at the junction with Soi Phuthon. These Chinese shrines are Taoist and are dedicated to particular gods.

The Jui Tui shrine is dedicated to the vegetarian god, Kui Wong. It is the center of activities during the Vegetarian Festival. The Put Jor shrine is dedicated to the goddess of mercy. It is 200 years old (although it was rebuilt 100 years ago after a fire) and is the oldest Chinese shrine in Phuket.

The Shrine of the Serene Light:
This is a surprising little discovery just yards from bustling Phang Nga Road but you will not see it from the road. It is up a small alley near the junction with Yaowarat Road. From Yaowarat Road, you walk passed what is probably the best second hand bookshop in Phuket and turn left up the alley with the Chinese flags at the entrance.

A local Chinese family built this shrine in 1889. It has a nice little garden where you can take the weight off your feet for a while and watch the comings and goings. You will see local people paying their respects by lighting candles and josh sticks. Then look inside the shrine which is rammed with religious artifacts.

Sam San Shrine: On Krabi Road, near the junction with Patiphat Road are two more small temples. The one on the road is Khachonrangsah Temple. The more interesting one, set back a little from the road, is Sam San Shrine. This shrine is dedicated to the Goddess of the sea and they hold ceremonies here to bless newly launched boats.

Mangol Nimit Temple: On Dibuk Road is a traditional Thai Buddhist temple. Inside you will find the usual selection of Buddha images and religious artifacts.
Thai Hua Museum
Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi Road in the old town area. It was originally a Chinese school. It features exhibits about the history of Phuket, particularly concentrating on the role Chinese immigrants played in Phuket's development

Thavorn Hotel Lobby Museum
The Thavorn Hotel is on Ratsada Road. It was built in 1961 and was Phuket's first 5-star hotel. It is looking a little worn these days but still has plenty of character.

In the hotel's lobby is a small museum containing artifacts from Phuket's history. There are all sorts of antiques and paraphernalia from the old tin mining days such as mining implements and opium pipes. One of the centerpieces is a glass case containing two sabers, which the two heroines apparently used to fight the Burmese. Perhaps the most fascinating is the collection of old photos. Entrance is 30 baht.

Downtown Market
The downtown market is the main fresh food market in Phuket. It is on Ranong Road.

The market is a constant hive of activity and never closes. The produce available varies depending on the time of day and the best time to shop is actually early morning from 2am to 6am. This is when many of the local restaurant owners buy their ingredients for the next day's business.

Take a wander around the market and you will see an extraordinary range of local food produce. Take the opportunity to try some of the amazing fresh local fruits. On one side of the road is a side road with an open-air market selling mostly fruit and veg. On the other side of the road is the indoor market where they sell meat, seafood and other produce.

Khao Rang Viewpoint
For a fantastic view across Phuket Town, make your way up Khao Sim Bi Road to the top of Khao Rang (Khao sounds like cow and is the Thai word for hill).

You can see across Phuket Town all the way to the southern coast and islands beyond. There is a small exercise park at the top of the hill.

There are a couple of nice restaurants. Halfway up the hill is Viewpoint Restaurant. The food here is nothing special but the views make up for it. At the top of the hill is the nicer Tung Ka Cafe, again with great views and nestled into the jungle.

Saphan Hin
Saphan Hin is a nice spot for a bit of relaxation or activity if you are up for it. It is a large leisure park created on a land reclamation project built in 1969. In the circle at the entrance to the park is the Tin Mining Monument dedicated to Australian Edward Thomas Miles who brought the first tin dredger to Phuket in 1909.

The large area reclaimed from the sea contains a number of sports and recreational facilities. There is a sports stadium, large swimming pool, Thai boxing stadium, tennis courts, petanque, basketball courts and indoor sports hall.

There are a number of karaoke bar & restaurants and they hold a small fresh food market daily in the central car park. It is also a popular spot for picnics under the trees by the sea. When the tide is out you will see locals foraging the muddy seabed for shellfish.

The area is pleasant to visit during the day but unfortunately it has become a haunt for local motorbike gangs in the evenings. This is usually no problem but there have been occasional outbreaks of violence.

King Rama IX Park
For a break from the bustle and noise of the streets, head to King Rama IX Park, also known as Suan Luang (royal park). You can access the park from Chao Fa Road or Wai-Rat Hong-Yuk Road. It is a large park with a big lake in the middle. It is a popular place for some late afternoon jogging and there are also some exercise classes from 5pm onwards.

You will see the locals playing takraw with great dexterity. It is an Asian game that is basically keepy-uppy with a small rattan ball.

La Fourchette, Chiangmai

La Fourchette - a new French restaurant on Thanon Phra Pokklao (3 kings road) across the street from Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phan Tao, the only Wat left in the city that’s all wood. (Paul Schoenkopf) I ate there and liked it and the prices are reasonable for a French restaurant. The following is a review from Chiangmai Mail.

La Fourchette
Quality French Cuisine – at very reasonable prices!
By Brian Baxter
Chiang Mai, as is soon discovered, is a village pretending to be a city: word travels quicker than an east wind, rumours abound and half-baked opinions and prejudices gain semi- credence within hours. This could be the place where “Chinese whispers’ originated.
Happily, amidst all the chat from people with not enough to occupy their time and minds, there is often good advice to be found and nuggets of truth to be sifted out. That proved to be the case in the constant trickle of reports I heard about the ‘wonderful’, amazing value’, ‘charming’, ‘authentic French’ restaurant which opened a couple of months ago in the heart of the Old City, directly across the street from the Wat Chedi Luang.

People enjoy bearing good news (hence this one-off return to the food column) not least because they recall what happens to messengers of bad tidings.
The buzz got going partly because of the paucity of decent French eating places in Chiang Mai, especially at modest prices. Italian certainly, Japanese increasingly, Thai obviously but French rarely. A second reason was the presence of the avuncular original chef from Le Coq d’Or, all of 32 years ago in the role of ‘conseil generale’. His energetic and handsome son is the chef here, schooled by long experience in classic tradition. The ‘front of house’ role is filled by a vivacious and clever manageress. Between the trio they could charm the birds from the trees but luckily they more productively offer us a welcome dining out experience in a city full of too many second rate – especially farang- restaurants.
It is easy have a satisfying and generous three course meal plus coffee whilst staying below the 500 baht a head range. Remarkable value (even with an over strong baht): long may it last.
On a recent visit, Neil (who kindly took the photographs) and I enjoyed the following: a full bodied vegetable soup (they also offer a pureed version), properly poached eggs Florentine, followed by duck in a brandy sauce and a super fresh trout from the King’s project and desserts of soufflé Grand Marnier and a blackcurrant ice-cream cake with coulis on the side. The main dishes were well garnished with al dente cooked vegetables and a choice of potatoes. Water is served ad lib at no charge.
Now it must be added that we shared a bottle of eminently quaffable French Merlot (720 baht) and followed the meal with a Cointreau and a Cognac, which between them doubled the final bill. On another visit three of us took our own wine (no corkage at present) and even with a tip and coffee each parted with 500 baht for a spectacularly good meal of three courses, including duck with grapes, a spring chicken and giant prawns in a ginger infused sauce (superb). They expect to have Italasia on board to supply a wider range of wines than at present in the next couple of weeks.

The menu is comprehensive rather than extensive. There are some eight or so soups (around 90 baht), including a shrimp bisque and two onion soups , one with garlic and one with Gruyere and a whole range of salads, plus other interesting starters such as Quiche Lorraine and the cheese tart. The main courses offer little for vegetarians but there are many fish dishes and an even greater selection of meat, including steaks and pork, along with duck and chicken. The puddings are a treat all on their own.

I was won over to La Fourchette on a first visit, when a bowl of crispy radishes was offered, along with sea salt, fresh butter and crusty bread, whilst we checked out the menu. Who could ask for more? The restaurant is reasonable spacious and decorated with vibrant paintings. There is a well stocked bar to the rear and seating for around 30 people, including a smoking area on the front terrace. The tables are a trifle on the small side and when they are busy (a couple of party groups, one rather noisy, during one visit) the service can get a little distrait, but never less than attentive. The menu is admirable in its clarity but lacks a Thai translation: a pity.
La Fourchette opens only in the evenings and because of it proximity to ‘walking street’ and the difficulty of parking, they close on Sundays. Hopefully they will build on their early success, rather than try to extend and lower standards. If so this should become one of the very best eating places in the whole City. You will find them directly across from Chedi Luang and about a hundred metres on the left from the end of Walking Street or five hundred metres along from the Three King’s Monument, heading away from the moat. The phone number (essential for bookings) is 089 758 5604 and English, Thai and French are spoken. Bon appétit! (Photos by Neil Robinson).

Spent 4 days at the Fern Paradise and it was a great base for exploring Chiang Mai. It's a small family run hotel with rooms built in beautiful gardens. The staff are very helpful and the owner, Om , was always around to help out if required.
The highlight of our trip was meeting a fantastic local taxi driver named Patrick who acted as our guide for 3 days and took us everywhere including the Golden Triangle. His English was perfect and his knowledge of the area was fantastic.
If you need a local guide ask Om to contact Patrick for you, he really is a gem.

Thailand is Top Destination for Medical/Wellness Tourists

Thailand is Top Destination for Medical/Wellness Tourists

According to reports voiced at a recent Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) seminar in Qatar Thailand currently holds a 38% stake in the world’s medical tourism market, the largest of any country in the globe.

Qatar, the 5th of October 2010: Dr. Surapong Ambhanwong (Phayathai Hospital Chief Medical & International Business Officer) explained that the passage of international patients was currently producing an estimated 920,000 travellers to the Kingdom of Thailand annually, making it the number one destination for medical tourists.

Speaking at the inaugural Medical Health and Wellness Roadshow in Doha, Qatar, Dr. Ambhanwong explained that the scope of procedures being undertaken in Thailand was wide, covering areas such as plastic surgery, joint replacement, cancer treatment, open heart surgery and dental care.

“Many also visit Thailand to seek professional advice for a better quality of life, through Thailand’s many alternative medical centres and hospitals, to help control and reduce the threat of diabetes, cholesterol, obesity and blood pressure,” he said.

The roadshow, organised in conjunction with the TAT, was aimed at promoting Thailand’s expertise and specialisation in providing cutting-edge medical care throughout the world and in particular focusing on the Gulf States.

The initiative will see representatives from Thailand’s leading hospitals and wellness centers visit the Middle East to meet directly with industry professionals and medical travel consultants as well as regional government administrators.

Present at the roadshow, TAT director Pramoth Supyen revealed that Middle Eastern travel to Thailand was constantly on the rise, whether seeking medical care or leisure travel. He stated that the TAT was now focusing its aims on further promoting tourism in the region based on the success of initial cooperation with region governments.

“Thailand proves an attractive option as a medical destination due to the country’s well established industry to provide high quality, cost effective treatment of international standards,” he said “the medical industry has proven itself with the added advantage of providing far superior nursing care, as well as the unique Thai approach and attention to personal care”.

The Thai delegation that visited Qatar from Oman has now left the nation for Bahrain on Tuesday.

Middle-Eastern Arrivals Continue to Grow for Thailand

Middle-Eastern Arrivals Continue to Grow for Thailand

Thailand continues to see a steady increase in visitor arrivals from the Middle East, the kingdom welcoming a total of 261,657 visitors, representing 22.20 per cent growth, in the first six months of 2010. This comes in spite of the country’s political situation during April/May.

Thailand, the 22nd of September 2010: The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Dubai has been meeting with local travel trade partners on a regular basis to strengthen relations and restore confidence in travel to the kingdom, according to officials.

Numbers have been boosted on the back of TAT Dubai’s TV commercial initiatives promoting “Destination Thailand” on Al Jazeera and Cable TV Showtime Orbit, which cover the entire Middle Eastern region.

The TAT office also launched a “Thailand Summer Special Offer” joint promotion with Etihad Airways, which runs from June through September 2010. The promotion is supported by an online advertising campaign, radio spots and special in-store promotions at various department stores and shopping malls.

In addition, TAT Dubai aims to achieve extensive media coverage in an effort to restore confidence among individual travellers and encourage them to travel to Thailand and is actively generating news and promoting activities via online as well as print media.

The UAE decision to lift the ban on travel to Thailand just in time for the onset of the outbound travel season for the Middle East is expected to boost the flow of tourists into the Kingdom with analyst speculating unprecedented figures for Middle Eastern visitors in 2010.

In conclusion, Qatar Airways has also announced the introduction of additional Doha-Bangkok flights as well as a Doha-Phuket direct flight.

Commencing 1 November 2010, Qatar Airways will be operating an additional flight on its Doha-Bangkok route, raising the total number of flights from two to three per week. The airline has also announced the launch of a daily Doha-Phuket direct flight scheduled to commence on 11 October 2010.

Phuket Mega-event: Bring on the Blues Rock Fest

Phuket Mega-event: Bring on the Blues Rock Fest

HE’S COMING: Phuket Blues Fest headline act Curtis Salgado has been nominated for a major blues music award.

PHUKET: The Phuket International Blues Rock Festival, now in its sixth year, will return to the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa in Karon from February 25-26.

Curtis Salgado, one of the headline acts to play at the festival, has been nominated for the Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year award at the 2011 Blues Music Awards.

The awards, the blues music equivalent of the Grammys, will be conferred in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 5.

The nomination follows Salgado’s award as Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year for his album “Clean Getaway” last year. Apart from his distinguished career as a soul blues musician, Salgado is well known as the man who inspired and mentored John Belushi for his role in the classic film The Blues Brothers.

Joining Salgado on stage in Phuket along with nine other music greats will be Mason Ruffner, an artist who has gained the respect of icons Bob Dylan and Santana.

Ruffner, from New Orleans, is best known for his track Gypsy Blood, which featured on the Steel Magnolias soundtrack.

The Phuket Gazette sponsors this festival.
