The Krua Sim restaurant is some 10 kilometres out of Chiang Mai city just off the old MaeJo Road in Sansai Luang.
It is a large restaurant with a very decent and extensive menu. Prices are also extremely reasonable and the fresh food experience brings visitors a real taste of the countryside - try the lightly fried vegetables, or the fish (Pla Seua Siam) or large river prawn Tom Yum. There are another 50 items from which to choose but nothing of a western nature - this is Thai cooking and food that is traditional in preparation and flavour - and all of it of a consistently high standard. All the furniture is traditional too - carved wooden tables, chairs and stools. There is a capacity of around 75 seats in the main hall but there are several smaller tables at the side making a total of around 100 seats. The service is usually prompt, but this does depend on how many other guests have arrived before you. The sides of the main hall are open to the elements, though diners are well protected by extensive roofing, so that there is always a fresh smell of flowers and pollen or the sound of hens, cows and birds from the nearby fields. It is a delightful place to eat and best approached before dusk when you may enjoy a pre-dinner drink as the sun sets. At one end of the main dining hall is a wide and brightly decorated stage with full karaoke and hi-fi equipment. The owner will be delighted to set up the machine for you to entertain your friends and other guests and the computerised karaoke machine has a a large store of popular western songs as well as many titles in Thai. The average price of a meal including soft drinks is in the region of 250 baht only.
To reach the restaurant from the city take the main superhighway to the San Dek intersection. Head north on the road marked towards Doi Saket and Chiang Rai. After a kilometre you cross the middle ring road, passing a fresh market on your left. Just as you pass the market, there is a left fork in the road immediately before a set of traffic lights - bear left and follow this road for 2 kilometres until you reach the traffic light intersection of the outer ring road at Sansai Noi. Go straight ahead - the road passes a post office, 7-11, school, police station and bank. As the road winds into Sansai Luang villag 2 kilometres later, you will see the wall of a temple jutting out on your left - turn left here into a small lane and follow it for half a kilometre - there is a new and quite large school building on your left - you need to turn right here and follow this road through a Z-bend, on into the straight and then the little soi leading to the restaurant is on the right, illuminated with a large wooden sign and lights. There is a car park just alongside the sign or alternatively drive into the soi and park in the first field on the left. The restaurant is just a metre or two on the right over the road and the main dining hall is a stroll through a delightful garden set among lofty palm trees and other fruit trees. You will be welcomed immediately by the owner and his wife and they will ensure that you will have a memorable experience in their lovely restaurant. The directions sound complicared but they are really quite straightforward - but become more difficult after dark which is why I suggest a twilight arrival!
