National Elephant Day - Thailand
Despite the protection afforded to elephants in Thailand. Elephant numbers have seriously declined over the years.  One hundred years ago, there were believed to have been 100.000+ elephants in the Kingdom.  Today, there are only approximately 3 – 4 thousand, of which most are held in captivity.
The 13th March was declared National Thai Elephant Day in 1968 by the Thai government at that time.  The aim of National Thai Elephant Day is to draw attention to the national animal of Thailand and the roles it has played in Thai culture, religion and tradition.
In Mae Taeng Elephant Park, Chiang Mai, we held traditional religious rites to wish good luck and health for the elephants and the mahouts. We also held a party for the elephants with an “EAT ALL YOU CAN” bean feast of their favorite food and fruits including sugar cane, fresh sweet corn, pineapples, coconuts and bananas.
