Information

Borsang is known throughout Thailand as the ‘Umbrella Village’. The village is situated north of Chiang Mai along the Sankhampaeng Road where it meets the Doi Saket Road about 10km out of town. Borsang is famed for handmade parasols made from bamboo and rice paper. The village has made umbrellas for generations and the art has been handed down through a small number of families that live here and is said to have originated from a Thai Buddhist monk who learned the practice on a pilgrimage to Burma.

We stopped here on the way to the Thai silk factory, visit both good half day out by the way. This place was small but very cool and free to walk around. Get a chance to see how they make these wonderful umbrella's, step by step. Artists there as well if you want anything drawn on, we spent an hour in the shop after buying all sorts of items to paintings, umbrella's (obviously), linen, lighting, souvenirs. Only 20 mins out of town!

Very artistic! My kids, nieces and nephews love getting butterfly and elephant painted on their Jeans.

the little cafe by the main handicrafts centre is great for tired feet - great coffee and ice cream. Great to see the whole process of making umbrellas from start to finish. Lots of other little shops around too. Also check out the fish park - guaranteed to fish a huge fish (and throw it back in the lake) - even if you're not a fisherman (we're not!)
