i heard raving reviews about quality of arts & crafts in chiangmai. can i get some recommendations on where to get silkware, lacquerware, celadon, household arts/crafts and paintings?Is San kamphaeng any good?

Hi, Give Ban Tawai Handicraft Village a try in Hang Dong.
Also the Sunday walking street Markets sell a lot of handicraft goods.

The road to Sam Kamphaeng is lined with craft factories covering the full spectrum of handicrafts. Most have a small demo area showing how they make it, then a huge shop. They draw lots of buses and tour vans.
Baan Tawai to the south specializes in wood handicrafts, lots of little shops to explore, but lots of other stuff is creeping in, the old adage "if tourists will buy it, we will sell it".
And you will find shops through the city itself selling handicraft items, as well as at the Sunday and Saturday walking street markets.
You might stop by Only Khao Soi restaurant near by the Yaang Come Village hotel, they sell a shopping guide book that covers handicrafts and more. It is a good guide, written based on experience not ad driven.

The quality of the arts and crafts is amazing. It's an art lovers heaven.
The most beautiful thing is just wandering around and finding these amazing talented people sitting making things. Sunday Walking Street is the place to go. Also the villages around Chiang Mai. There are many and mostly within about 15 mins drive.
I'd suggest buying a Nancy Chandler Map - available at the airport, all the book stores in Chiang Mai and in some hotel foyers. The map is a guide to shopping and eating in Chiang Mai. Nancy is an American artist who has lived in Thailandforever. Her map is a work of art in itself. It will guide you through where to go - for example there is a great map of all the surrounding villages and it lists on the map what they make in each village. You can order it online if you want a copy before you go.

In addition to the above suggestions, I would also recommend Nimanhaemin Road ("trendy" end of town), especially soi 1 for contemporary arts and home decor. It's just a small lane with lots of nice shops. Start at the end - I love "Gongdee Gallery", and make your way out.
There's also a really good Northern Thai restaurant just opposite Nimanhaemin Soi 1 called Hongtaew Inn.
Thapae Rd & Charoen Rat Rd also have some beautiful shops.
