We planned our honeymoon around heading out to an elephant camp and buying a painting, its why we chose to go to Chiang Mai specifically for this. Our hotel helped us book this camp based on what we wanted to see and I am very impressed. I had read about being careful which elephant attractions you endorsed because of the cruel way the elephants can be treated in some places, so I was keeping an eye out. I also did ask alot of questions when I was there and was quite satisfied that these elephants are treated very well.
The show was something quite amazing, the art gallery was incredible and the large pieces on display in the sales gallery were just stunning!! The camp itself is quite large and a trip down to the nursery is well worth the walk. And there is nothing at all like getting a hug from an elephant or two!!
Come prepared with some small notes however, by the time you buy bananas and sugar cane to feed the elephants, pay the tip for the photos with the elephant at the feeding enclosure and again when you pose sitting on the front leg of an elephant, feed the mother elephants in the nursery..... it all adds up, however the standard tip is 20B which was around 60c for us so we were not too concerned about handing them over frequently, but it can be hard to break large notes so make sure you bring more than you think you need.
We opted for the trek to the longneck village which was very peaceful. The village itself is quite amazing however there are some vendors selling trinkets at the entrance, the better stuff is further inside the village where you can see the longneck women weaving and laughing amongst themselves. We opted for the trek because I wanted a jungle elephant ride, not because we wanted to see the village. However, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the small look into their way of life.
The elephant show is around 1hr, so allow around 2hrs if you are just visiting the camp. The ride to the longneck village is around an hour and by the time you walk around you will use the best part of an hour again, so if you add the trek allow 4hrs for this.
