We had a great time, where we booked this elephant ride with a tour that included other attractions (bamboo raft ride, etc). I can't speak to whether or not the elephants are abused as you hear about from many travel websites. I can say that we didn't see anything abusive while we were there, nor did we see any scars on the elephants that screamed of abuse.
The elephant ride was a lot of fun, just make sure to hold on! I think our elephant wanted to mess with us, so she shot some mud our way through her trunk. Make sure to wear some clothing that you don't mind getting messed up.
This is a must do! For 100 baht, you can buy a picture from them framed.. I'm sure this is expensive in Thai standards, but hey some things are priceless.
