What makes one city better than another?
For some, it’s the culture. For others, the cuisine. Some like proximity to adventure; some like it hot (and beachy).
With so many yardsticks, it must be tough to come up with a solid ranking. Kudos to Travel + Leisure for giving it a try. In their recent ‘World’s Best’ survey results, they’ve listed the top global cities according to a reader poll.
The top 10 cities contain a fascinating mix of the predictable and surprising. We’ve conducted our own (internal) poll to reflect on some of the towns that made it into the T+L list. As you might have guessed, there’s plenty of disagreement.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai named top 10 best cities in the world The city of Bangkok has been placed third in the World’s Best Awards 2006, ranked as the world’s third favourite city for tourism–after Italy’s Florence and Rome, respectively.
It’s a repeat honour for Bangkok. The City of Angels copped the American award as Asia’s best every year for the four previous years.
Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin received the “Asia�s Best City 2006” award from America’s Travel + Leisure magazine on Friday.
More than that, Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai was voted the world’s fifth favourite tourist city and second in Asia. The magazine conducted surveys of tourists and its readers through its website and questionnaires.
Criteria used to choose which cities are the best in the world include the categories of people, culture, arts and value for money.
Isara Sunthornwat, spokesman for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said receiving the award for the fifth consecutive year proved that the city of Bangkok is recognised by tourists around the world in terms of beautiful landscape and unique culture.
It shows that Thailand is ready to be the hub of Asia’s tourism, he said.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai ranked best cities of Asia by leading US travel magazine
BANGKOK, Thailand — Bangkok and Chiang Mai have been rated as the Best Cities of Asia 2008 from American readers of Condé Nast Traveler, a US leading travel and lifestyle magazine. The readers voted Bangkok as Best City of Asia with an overall score of 82.8%, followed by Chiang Mai (81.2%).
The award was conferred at the Readers Choice Awards 2008 Ceremony and Gala Dinner held at the New York Public Library, New York City, USA on October 15, 2008. It was accepted on behalf of the entire Thai travel and tourism industry by Mr. Weerasak Kowsurat, Minister of Tourism and Sports.
Readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, which has an audience of 3.1 million and readership of 32,633, were polled on the basis of first-hand experience of their world-wide holidays.
For 20 years, it has conducted an annual readers’ choice survey to rank best cities, cruise lines, airlines, hotels, and resorts wordwide and honor them with the World’s Best award.
Criterion scores for the best cities, which represent the percentage of respondents rating a candidate excellent were averaged to determine the final score-atmosphere/ambience, culture/sites, friendliness, lodging, restaurants, and shopping.
Other high-level rankings attained by Thai products services in Readers’ Choice Awards 2008 included Phuket and Samui, which were respectively ranked 3rd and 6th on the list of Top 10 Islands in Asia. Thai Airways International was ranked 7th on the list of Top 25 airlines.

Thailand’s cities, islands and top hotels voted “World’s Best”
Two cities in Thailand, Bangkok and Chiang Mai, were voted among the top 10 cities in the world, according to Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards, the results of which were published in the August 2009 issue of the magazine.
Travel + Leisure readers selected Bangkok and Chiang Mai as the third and fifth best cities in the world, respectively — as well as second and third best cities in Asia. The Thai islands of Phuket and Ko Samui were awarded the third and fifth best islands in Asia.
Among The Top 100 Hotels in the world, eight were in Thailand, including the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai (#7), the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok (#20) and the Anantara Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai (#53). And 11 Thai hotels were also named among the top 40 resorts and city hotels in Asia.
The 14th Annual Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards ranks the best cities, hotels, resorts, cruises and airlines worldwide. The awards are the results of an annual, impartial survey that allows its readers to vote for their favorite travel destinations around the world.

The reasons why Chiang Mai is the most popular retirement destination in Thailand and also SE Asia are many and include:
Low cost, effective health care and the ability to speak English to the doctors many who were trained overseas and the ability to see a specialist promptly unlike Canada where AFTER your family doctor decides he has milked the system for enough money and cannot determine what ails you FINALLY makes an appointment for you to see a specialist in 3 MONTHS.
The foods are delicious and not affordable but downright cheap as many fruits are grown locally including strawberries. Year around enjoy bananas, mangoes, pineapples, watermelons, apples, durian, and many fruits that I do not even know the name of but which are absolutely declious.
The cost of living in Chiang Mai from accommodations, to dining, to sightseeing is cheap compared to North America and Europe. Comfortable accommodations for 20-25% of the cost of equivelent accommadations back in North America yet with all the amenities you could want and ask for. Cable tv includes English movies and about 55 channels, hi speed internet even wirless in your room, balcony, mini fridge, dvd, swimming pool, and even kitchenettes.
Chiang Mai is a very safe city to live in and I can walk safely at night anywhere in the inner city without any fears whatsoever, and just outside of the city I have to ignore the dogs that protect individual properties. The dogs will bark to alert the owner and that is it.
There is an abudance of things to do in Chiang Mai, a city that is the second largest in Thailand, home to thousands of foreigners who have discoverd that this is the place to retire to, and also Chiang Mai is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. Chiang Mai zoo, temples, man made lake, golf, biking, shopping, massage, to relaxing at the local pub and shooting a game of pool or talking to some expats.
You can live here and communicate in English and not have to learn how to speak Thai. Many Thai's here speak some English and English is spoken at banks, Government offices, and in health care facilities as there are many foreigners living here and also it is a tourist city as well.
It is cooler in Chiang Mai as compared to Phuket or Pattaya. Also safer and lower costs of living here in Chiang Mai compared to Phuket or Pattaya.
and the KEY reason why Chiang Mai is the number one place in Thailand to retire and also the most popular place in all of SE Asia. Over 18,000 foreigners are living here in retirement and happily from what I can tell.

ศูนย์ข่าวเชียงใหม่ – รมต.ท่องเที่ยวและกีฬา ชู เชียงใหม่ได้รับรางวัลอันดับ 2 สุดยอดเมืองท่องเที่ยวในเอเชีย ชี้ เป็นโอกาสดีเปิดตัวลุยตลาดต่างชาติ ขณะเดียวกัน ยืนยันยังไม่มีความคิดลดเป้าหมายจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวและรายได้แม้หลายปัจจัย รุมเร้า เชื่อ ทิศทางยังไปได้ดีหากไม่มีการปิดสนามบินและประกาศภาวะฉุกเฉิน
วันนี้ (20 ต.ค.) ที่ห้องประชุมอาคารนิทรรศการ สวนเฉลิมพระเกียรติราชพฤกษ์ 2549 จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ นายวีระศักดิ์ โควสุรัตน์ รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวและกีฬา เป็นประธานแถลงข่าวอย่างไม่เป็นทางการกรณีที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ได้รับรางวัลอันดับที่ 2 ประเภทเมืองท่องเที่ยวในเอเชีย (Best City of Asia) จากนิตยสารท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยม Conde Nast Traveler ของสหรัฐอเมริกา ที่ได้ทำการสุ่มสำรวจความเห็นจากผู้อ่าน 32,000 คน
รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวและกีฬา กล่าวว่า การได้รับรางวัลดังกล่าว ถือว่าเป็นความน่าภาคภูมิใจอย่างยิ่ง และเป็นการแสดงให้เห็นถึงผลการทำงานอย่างหนักของทุกฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้องในการ ทำให้จังหวัดเชียงใหม่เป็นที่รู้จัก ซึ่งเชื่อว่าจะเป็นผลดีต่อการท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ในการช่วยดึงดูดใจให้นักท่องเที่ยวอยากเดินทางมามากขึ้น และน่าจะเป็นโอกาสที่ดีที่จะได้ใช้รางวัลที่ได้รับในการประชาสัมพันธ์ทำการ ตลาดในต่างประเทศให้มากขึ้น โดยปัจจุบันพบว่านักท่องเที่ยวจากประเทศต่างๆ นอกจากประเทศเดิมๆ อย่างสหรัฐอเมริกาหรือยุโรป เริ่มเดินทางมาท่องเที่ยวจังหวัดเชียงใหม่มากขึ้น เช่น เกาหลี รัสเซีย สเปน หรือเนเธอแลนด์ เป็นต้น เห็นได้จากอัตราจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวที่เพิ่มขึ้นทุกปี
สำหรับปัญหาวิกฤตทางการเงินที่เกิดขึ้นกับสหรัฐอเมริกา ที่เป็นตลาดนักท่องเที่ยวหลักของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่จะส่งผลกระทบหรือนั้น นายวีระศักดิ์ แสดงความเห็นว่า ในส่วนของนักท่องเที่ยวยังเชื่อว่าจะมีการเดินทางท่องเที่ยวเหมือนเดิม แต่จะมีการเพิ่มความระมัดระวังในการใช้จ่ายมากขึ้น ดังนั้น หากต้องการให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้ามาเหมือนเดิมก็มีความจำเป็นที่จะต้องพัฒนา สินค้าและบริการทางการท่องเที่ยวของเชียงใหม่ให้มีความประทับใจและรู้สึก คุ้มค่ากับการที่จะจ่ายเงินมาท่องเที่ยว ซึ่งหากสามารถทำได้เชื่อว่าไม่น่าจะมีปัญหา
ส่วนการที่หลายฝ่ายเป็นห่วงว่าสถานการณ์ต่างๆ จะมีผลกระทบต่อการท่องเที่ยวและต้องปรับลดยอดเป้าหมายต่างๆ ลง ทั้งจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวและรายได้นั้น ยืนยันว่า ในเวลานี้จะยังไม่มีการปรับลดเป้าหมายต่างๆ ลงอย่างแน่นอน แต่จะต้องหันมาวางแผนและทำงานอย่างหนักมากขึ้นในการที่จะคิดหาวิธีดึงดูดใจ ให้นักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติเดินทางเข้ามามากขึ้น โดยจะต้องพยายามรักษาตลาดเดิมไว้ให้ด้วยการเจาะตลาดนักท่องเที่ยวที่มีความ ต้องการเฉพาะ เช่น กลุ่มประชุมสัมมนา ท่องเที่ยวผจญภัยหรือรักษาสุขภาพความงาม เป็นต้น และพยายามแสวงหาตลาดใหม่ๆ ซึ่งเบื้องต้นมีการเล็งตลาดนักท่องเที่ยวกลุ่มประเทศที่มีรัศมีการบินจาก ประเทศไทยไม่เกิน 6 ชั่วโมง เช่น กลุ่มประเทศตะวันออกกลาง อินเดีย หรืออินโดนีเซีย เป็นต้น
นอกจากนี้ รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวและกีฬา กล่าวว่า สถานการณ์ทางการเมืองในประเทศไทย ไม่น่าจะเป็นปัญหาอุปสรรคต่อการท่องเที่ยว เพราะประเทศส่วนใหญ่มีความเข้าใจดีว่าความคิดเห็นที่แตกต่างเป็นเรื่องปกติ ในสังคมประชาธิปไตย แต่สิ่งนักท่องเที่ยวและผู้ประกอบการท่องเที่ยวที่เป็นห่วงมาก คือ การปิดสนามบินและการประกาศสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน ซึ่งหากไม่มีกรณีดังกล่าวเชื่อว่าไม่น่าจะมีอุปสรรค
